So I finally got to see this thing today. Here's a quick review... For the first hour or so I was really enjoying it. Despite the excruciatingly excessive exposition, I liked the world building. I liked the tone. The directing style was exceptional. I love the way they "embrace the wondrousness of the comics". And the FX and visual design were stellar. Even though I'm typically very anti-CGi I have to say I was really impressed. Atlantis looked phenominal. But the last hour and twenty of this movie were just woefully mediocre. All style over substance. I quickly realized that I did not give a damn about these characters. And I have to say the acting was awful! Mamoa and Heard are just bad. That guy that plays Manta was even worse. And Jesus Christ was the humor obnoxious! I know I often blame Marvel for using too much humor, but at least their humor lands most of the time. This stuff was cringe worthy. And whoever the hell decided to put those pop songs in deserves to be fed to a shark. Seriously, WTF? The villain is creating his weaponry and a corny pop song plays?! WHY? !!!!!@!!! Anyway, I give it a 6/10. A lot of fun, but it is extremely superficial. I'm probably being a bit harsh but this is my immediate reaction. Loved the comic accurate costumes though!!!!!&

Great review! Despite my complete lack of interest in character and movie, family wanted to see it and we were going to go to see it while we were away (at this really cool movie theater built in the ’20s…but I digress). We missed the showtime and the theater was closed the next day, so I never did get to see it, but your thoughts are in line with what I was expecting from the reviews I have read. I may finally see it when it comes on Netflix or TV.
It took you a long time to see it, huh? Glad to hear you finally got to!

I wanna hear more about this theater from the 20's! That sounds amazing. I've always wanted to go to one of those "Movie Palaces" from that era. They are just so damn cool.

Seeing it tomorrow. My expectations are pretty low. Just don't want to be bored. You won't be bored. I can say that much.

I've always wanted to go to one of those "Movie Palaces" from that era. They are just so damn cool. Lake Placid, NY: It’s not quite a “palace” (though that’s its name—“Palace Theatre”), but it looks really nice. The infamous Uncle Save-a-Coin (the one who was surreptitiously ribbing Hallmark movies back in November) got a guided tour a few years back, and I had always wanted to take a look inside. I finally got to on this trip, though we didn’t see a movie there. As I wrote, the décor and design are still great-looking, even if not well-kept—but I got a genuinely creepy vibe in there, oddly enough. Not entirely sure why, except that there were corridors that looked like, of all things, Disney’s Tower of Terror ride (and the girl behind the counter let us wander around the place aimlessly, so it felt like we were the only people there). Some more information here.

What I mean comparing it to Tower of Terror: Palace Theatre: Tower of Terror: I tried in vain to find a more comparable picture, but suffice it to say the resemblance was eerie. But I also just got a creepy feeling, wandering the hallways. Anyway. Cool place.

Aquaman was such a dull character in the cartoons but Black Manta was damn cool with a Ted Cassidy voice.

I had a feeling this would be your thoughts on Aquaman Mr. Ackbar. Style over substance is a good summary, which isn't a bad thing in itself if your only after ''a visually fun film''.

Some more information here. Neat! I love those historical theaters, too. I grew up going to various performances and movies at the Palace Theatre in Albany, built around 1931 I believe.

It was visually awesome, just stunning for much of the spectacle, and def a fun movie. I enjoyed a lot of what came out of the first half, but it felt so choppy. Like there was no flow between scenes. Then the second half felt rushed. Just one thing after the other, but simultaneously as if not that much happened. Still great. I want to watch it again.
I’m still trying to figure out how Arthur got his armor in that scene near the end. Did I miss an explanation? Is it like Green Lantern’s costume coming from the ring?
And a nitpick, but it distracted me for a while- if Arthur is the only one that talks to animals, how does Orm get his tylosaur (which was so kickass) to do so much independently in battle? There’s training, but where’s the psychic link with these beasts? I forgot for a bit that that’s a unique ability to Arthur, and noticed later that those seahorses and sharks are so in tune with their riders. 🤷♂️
Nicole Kidman is the best. She can do no wrong.

I thought it was thoroughly fun and enjoyable. It has some problems but I had a blast overall.

Some more information here. Awesome! One of my biggest fantasies is to build a retro movie palace like that. Of course... That requires money. 😐

What killed me is that they absolutely nailed the things that could've been cheesy: the creatures, the underwater cities, the costumes... All amazing. All they had to do was make Arthur a bit more than a goofy bro dude and I would've given this one high marks. I just needed more in terms of character development. And, the casting of Mamao and Heard just did not work for me.

I was looking close to see if the King's corpse had the armor on but I couldn't tell. I think he did though. Yeah, I also have no idea why Arthur has this ability and no one else does. There is so much mythos thrown at the audience but none of it is properly developed. And Nicole Kidman is awesome. I really enjoyed her in this.

Aquaman was such a dull character in the cartoons but Black Manta was damn cool with a Ted Cassidy voice. Have you seen the movie yet? In costume he is awesome. And there's a definite voice change with the suit that makes him sound really menacing. But out of the suit, he is just basically a tough guy trying to constantly look mean.

It was a movie with a very unique visual design and some very impressive direction. And I can't really hold Aquaman to too high a standard. I give a lot of passes to MCU movies as well. I'm a fan of the genre so I'm usually not overly harsh on these flicks

The movie implies that Author inherits his ability to communicate with aquatic life from his grandfather (who could also do the same). Orm is also descended from Atlan and is fully Atlantean, and yet, he does not have this ability.

Yep, and a lot of it isn't necessary to the plot in my opinion. Atlantis' fall as a hubristic society is only incidental to the search for the trident McGuffin. Black Panther makes Wakanda's history as an isolationist country relevant to the plot as it becomes a part of the current debate. Themyscira's hidden nature is necessary to the plot of Wonder Woman because it explains why Ares hasn't found them or the God killer.
