It’s on TV right now—watching it for the first time in a while. One of my favorite Mamet movies, along with The Edge—trickier than House of Games, though that may be better filmed—and one of Steve Martin’s very best performances. Pure Mamet-speak throughout, by every single character, too, so if that turns you off, don’t watch! The script is brilliant in the possible red-herrings that may or may not be leading to real solutions. So many questions remain, every time I watch it; I never know if by the end we get the whole solution, or if (as Roger Ebert posited in his review) Mamet still has an ace up his sleeve. What say you?

I really liked it a lot, the screenplay was ingenious, sort of like Sleuth was. But Rebecca Pidgeon's performance was just...blech.

For all of Mamet’s genius, he seems to be blind to his girlfriends’ lousy performances; Lindsay Crouse wasn’t much better in House of Games. Directing actors doesn’t seem to be his strong point, anyway; there are some great performances in his films, but they’re by great actors (e.g., William H. Macy, Joe Mantegna, Anthony Hopkins). Even the late, great Ricky Jay didn’t give particularly good performances in these movies but, rather, merely serviceable ones. I tend to overlook Pidgeon’s performance in this one, as bad as it is. The good stuff is just so good.

Hey one thing I never understood though. It's been a while since I've watched but if I recall much of the con depended on Joe finding out that Dell had no sister and would thus arouse his suspicions. But wouldn't this only have worked if Joe made an effort to track down the supposed sister? What if he hadn't done this? Then the whole plan would have just been dead in the water before taking off.

Haven't seen it since more or less when it came out. I remember liking it but don't recall any real specifics.
