"On a train trip West to become a mail order bride Susan Bradley (Judy Garland) meets a cheery crew of young women traveling out to open a " Harvey House " restaurant at a remote whistle stop to provide good cooking and wholesome company for railway travelers. When Susan and her bashful suitor find romance daunting, Susan joins the Harvey Girls instead. The saloon across the street with its alluring worldly-wise women offers them tough competition, fair and foul, and Susan catches the eye of the Ned Trent, the distant but intense proprietor of the bar."

"In a time when "The West" pretty much ends in Texas and only California is slowly being populated by the white men, there's a severe lack of women among the workers on Roy Whitman's farm in the California Valley. So he goes back east to Chicago to recruit 150 women willing to become wives for his employees. From the candidates he selects 138 who seem able to survive a months long journey across "The Great American Desert" and the Rocky Mountains."

A not so classic from only a few years ago Difret (2014) from Ethiopia. A 14-year-old girl, Hirut Assefa is kidnapped on her way home from school, the practice of abduction into marriage is common to her village and one of Ethiopia's oldest traditions. In self defence she flees the situation but ends up arrested fronting a high profile court case. Raising awareness about the issue of child marriage/abduction, the dramatic film chronicles the legal-precedent setting court case that outlawed the kidnapping of child brides in Ethiopia. An absolute classic is Sakura no mori no mankai no shita , Under The Cherry Blossom (1975) Masahiro Shinoda Gruff wild mountain man (Tomisaburô Wakayama) the self proclaimed Lord of his realm captures a beautiful woman (Shima Iwashita) who is passing through his domain., she will replace his collection of used wives. Unperturbed by his violent kidnapping, she demands to be carried on his back and constantly berates him, the manipulative city woman commands him and requires excessive demands to please her every whim...Highly Recommended...

Sweet Land (2005, directed by Ali Salim). In a small Minnesota town shortly after the end of WWI, a mail-order bride arrives to marry Olaf, a Norwegian immigrant dairy farmer in a community of the same. When it is discovered she is German, anti-German sentiment from the war turns the people against the new couple. This was an indie film with a limited release but “Sweet Land” tells a sweet story. Well worth your while.

Check out HOUSE OF A THOUSAND DOLLS, a jolly white slave trade epic from 1967. Martha Hyer & Vincent Price run the magic act that is a front for the sex slave/prostitution racket. George Nader is the hero and Maria Rohm amongst the "dolls". and check out that swinging theme tune ... Its a budget production though - I reckon two dozen "dolls" on display at most - but when they look like Maria I guess that;s OK Treat yourself!
