GMT, but when sailing in the Bristol Channel, we always referred to it as UST (Universal Standard Time).

If you are standing precisely at the North or South Pole, what time zone are you in? Or is there no time at all?

If you are standing precisely at the North or South Pole, what time zone are you in? Or is there no time at all? That's a good question... However... While, I understand that the idea of, a brief moment, were someone is standing right on the pole, is interesting to consider... I am sure the reality of the situation wouldn't be so individualistic... Most people wouldn't be there alone, and would be travelling with a group of people that would probably set up a nearby camp... at "best", The area of the camp would probably be set up over at least several time zones... (Unless the poles have their own time zones...) In order to function as a group, the camp would have to utilize one time zone, so everyone could synchronize their activities... For Example: Making sure everyone got up in the morning at "6 AM"... Odds are, the camp wouldn't even utilize a time zone that was geographically accurate... Because if you are right next to "The pole" and could see all 24 time zones around it, I don't think it would really matter... Most camps would probably just remain on the time "zone" that the majority of the people in their group come from... For Example: If a group of people came from the Eastern Coast of the USA, they would probably just use the Eastern Time zone... Or they would just use a time zone of a nearby research station... or nearby port... or something else related to their trip...

In practice, polar explorers and scientists simply choose whatever time zone is most convenient. Those working at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, for example, have chosen to use New Zealand local time.
