If they had done it without all that cheating, then it would be respectable. But since they did most of it by cheating, I don't respect cheaters. Respecting the Pats after all the cheating they've done would be like respecting Bernie Madoff. |

They play their best when people doubt them. I've been doubting them all year, and rightfully so. The bye week really helped them this year. Brady looked sharper, Edelman and Gronk seemed to be moving freely. Those three guys specifically seemed off all season. Brady was dealing with a knee and Edelman a foot injury, looks like they've gotten over those. Gronk still isn't the player he once was but still made an impact.
What impressed me the most was how the Patriots controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball yesterday. Brady was rarely if ever hurried, they ran the ball practically at will on the Chargers. Meanwhile the Pats pass rush actually put pressure on Rivers and the D contained Gordon and the running game. Was it the travel, the temperature or Rivers whining that put them in a mental hole they couldn't escape from, we'll never know.
If I wanted to go glass half empty (as Belichick wisely will do when he addresses the team this week) I'd point out the Chargers won the second half 21-6. But it was clear as you watched the game the Pats took their foot off the gas pedal. The entire 4th quarter was garbage time; they didn't want to tip their hand to KC any more than was necessary to win, and they had that game won by halftime.
All that said, dominating a SoCal team at home in 20 degree weather is one thing; going into the loudest stadium in the league and shutting down an explosive offense is a whole different animal. I don't like the Pats chances in this one, but I also thought they'd struggle against the Chargers so who knows. The Pats defense has improved considerably since the first time these teams met earlier this season, but again that win was at home and now they have to do it on the road. Should be a hell of a game.

Not counting the year he was lost for the season in week 1 (where they ended up missing the playoffs), Tom Brady has been the starting QB for 17 seasons and gone to at least the conference championship game 13 times. Hell, he'd gone to the Super Bowl for half of his career as a starter before this season started. |
