It's all fun and games until Rotten Tomatoes had to suspend comments on critics who dare something bad about The Dark Knight Rises. Rian Johnson also getting death threats over The Last Jedi seemed a measured and reasonable response. The reaction to Ghostbusters 2016 was also pretty gross. Maybe I'm too naïve. Movies have always been my passion but If someone said something negative about a movie I liked, I'd apologize for not having any fucks to give. I remember a documentary years ago called Cinemania. It followed a bunch of real hardcore movie goers. Makes most of us here look piddly in comparison.
Thoughts?

Yea people who take movies that seriously are morons. I hate people that can’t or won’t accept a subjective opinion that they disagree with.

I can be passionate about certain films, I'm willing to admit. But death threats or other forms of overzealous obsession I could never understand.

Yeah, the sort of people who go off the deep end about movies need to get a life. They probably also need to buy a new shirt as well.

I don’t think they take them that seriously.
They take their opinion too seriously.

Fandom cults are the worst. Debating movies can be fun, but I don't understand people who end up getting banned because the conversation devolves to ad homs and doxxing threats. Aquaman was just okay. I think Tim Burton's Batman films are superior to everything that's followed them. Ironman is a smug asshole. I prefer The Phantom Menace to The Force Awakens. I'm sorry if anyone feels like I'm attacking a corner of their soul with those opinions, but they're ONLY MOVIES.

There's a few people on the superhero boards that could take a breather.

What I can't stand is when someone on a movie forum says: it's only a movie. Gee, thanks for telling us Einstein. How else would we have ever known? lol If someone is having a heated discussion in a forum that is devoted to movies, one would assume people to be somewhat intense about it--why else would they even be posting?
As for the obsessive movie fans who want to kill Jar Jar Binks etc. I think one has to step back and analyze the phenomenon from the POV of mass markets and social media convenience.
If you have a film that is shown to millions of people--and some of them don't like it--that can translate into thousands and thousands of people. Of those thousands, some may well be bonafide psychotics. That has nothing to do with movie fandom--just numbers. The phenomenon of people seeing a Star Wars movie and really reacting negatively to it is not really such a surprise when you look at it as a numbers game.
Not to mention films designed by hedge fund managers are not likely to be well-received and they should not be surprised.
The marketing campaign for Transformers 3 had people saying "it's not Shakespeare." A casual understanding of theater history would reveal that in fact, Shakespeare was the crowd-pleaser of his day. His works had fantasy elements and low brow humor too.

People who are legit mentally ill get a pass, but 9/10 the people attacking your character and making empty threats are just simple assholes and there is really no excuse for it.

It's the modern equivalent of Groundlings behavior. In old theaters the public would bring in rotten tomatoes to throw at the stage if they didn't like it.
If something is mass marketed, it will get a variety of people.
The internet can be like a digitized rotting tomato.

I have movies, tv shows, music, etc... that I'm passionate about, so I know how it feels to hold something close to my heart. Having said that I can't seem to understand those that attack others who don't share their passion. I don't get it. Especially on a forum such as this. So somebody 1,500 miles away that you're never going to meet and wouldn't know even if you did wind up in the same place hates your favorite movie? Or somebody likes a movie that you don't. Who cares?

Death threats are a bit extreme, but just as you can love a movie, you should be allowed to hate a movie if you're passionate about the medium.

As bad as some of this stuff is, it PALES in comparison to the overreaction that some people have for sports. Think of it........people not only having their lives threatened over it, but ACTUALLY murdered, because of a GAME! Makes me sad to admit I actually belong to a species that includes cretins like that...... SAVE FERRIS
