See... this question is hard for me to answer, because Zendaya is actually quite attractive. But they dumb down her looks with this homely version of her. Wassup wit dat?
And also, I remember quite the number of people saying that Dunst wasn't anywhere near as hot as MJ was supposed to be. Now its all like "Dunst was so hawt!" Wha....?
Personally I'd have to go for Dunst because she's an adult. LOL!

For some ungodly reason, they decided to copy the recent trend of making "original characters" ... *surprise twist* ... famous characters! See also Khan, Talia al Ghul, Moneypenny, and more. Thus, MJ becomes a frumpy nerd girl to throw us off track in honor of a "OMG she's MJ the whole time!" reveal that was spoiled a year earlier when she was cast. And no one really bagged on Kirsten when she was first cast. I think she started losing her looks in the sequels and that's when the tide turned, no thanks to MJ being written as kind of a b*tch by 3. But yeah, she was pretty hot in 1. |

I never liked Dunst for it.
Pretty though she is, one has to bear in mind that the inspiration for Mary Jane was Ann-Margret.
Senator, Kirsten Dunst is no Ann-Margret.

Dunst also a better actress.
Zendaya has absolutely no screen presence at all. No charisma. She just isn't a good actress.
