Cool indeed. Bummer that there's only 1 Chilean and, since he grew up and made most of his movies in Spain, he doesn't count.

Cool indeed. Bummer that there's only 1 Chilean and, since he grew up and made most of his movies in Spain, he doesn't count. They selected Alejandro Amenabar for Chile but there are other directors I think of before him. Tito Davison was from Chillan, Alejandro Jodorowsky was born in Tocopilla and Raoul Ruiz was from Puerto Montt. I'm guessing it wasn't always easy for these three politicised directors making movies in Chile though, like during the restrictive days of General Augusto Pinochet. Davison found his greatest success in Mexico. Jodorowsky has worked in Mexico too, as well as France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Ruiz worked around Europe, notably in France where he was based for extended periods.

It seems like the work of many directors suffer when they leave their home country... Fritz Lang, for example.
Even my favorite director ever, Vittorio De Sica, made an American movie (with Clift) and it was awful... I also think Polanski's first movie "Knife in the Water" was his best, but it was nice to see a great movie like "Chinatown" in English - but I give a ton of credit to one of the best writers in Robert Towne, and Jack Nicholson, who is one of my favorite actors.

I imagine it must pose some issues on set working in different languages. I'm impressed how some filmmakers work solidly across the map.
