I just watched an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine from last season on Netflix. Jake has to go into protective custody with Capt. Holt's snooty husband, Kevin. Jake brings only his Nic Cage DVD collection to pass the time and forces Kevin to watch all of Cage's action movies against his will. Later, when they're freed, he learns of Cage's prestige films like Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Leaving Las Vegas and is upset that they didn't watch those instead. I really got to start watching that show. I've seen clips online and every one makes me laugh. You should. It has some zany weird humor, I always laugh watching it.

The first one that came to mind was Wild at Heart, followed by Birdy and The Rock.
This is a good place as any to casually mention that I own a DVD of The Godfather signed by his uncle.

My guess is most people affiliate him with the action movies from the late 1990's... Con Air/Face Off/The Rock (for the record... Face Off is the only one I like at this point in time even though I used to like the other two also). but maybe there is some others here and there outside of those. but as a general guideline... it seems like his general movies people like the most and general popularity was at it's best in the late 1990's up to the mid-to-late 2000's-ish. because I would say not much into the current decade he mostly disappeared. so you could say he had about a 15-ish years solid enough run. but just for me personally in terms of movie quality... 1)Lord of War (2005) - 10/10 (only one of eight movies I gave a 10/10 straight up) 2)Drive Angry (2011) - 7/10 (underrated at it's 5.4/10 average. it's only one of four movies that have a 5.9/10 or less average on IMDb that I gave a 7/10 or higher. I think it's carried by Nicolas Cage/Amber Heard/William Fichtner) 3)Face Off (1997) - 6.5-7/10 4)City of Angels (1998) - 6-6.5/10 -)Leaving Las Vegas (1995) -)The Family Man (2000) so basically he's got three movies in My Favorite Movies in general and then three more a bit shy of that status. but out of those I personally would tend to affiliate him most with his role in Lord of War or Face Off even though on a mainstream level, like I was saying above, the action movies from the late 1990's I suspect are what he's most known for as that's pretty much when he really started to get on the radar it seems as, like I also said above, he seemed to be roughly at his most popular in the late 1990's through pretty much the 2000's or so as not far into the current decade it seemed like he pretty much disappeared.
so I guess factoring in my own opinion along with mainstream popularity... Castor Troy from Face/Off (1997) would be my choice if I have to name only one role I most affiliate him with.
p.s. there used to be more movies that stood out from him for me but they have since taken a hit like... Kick-Ass/Knowing/National Treasure/Matchstick Men/Gone in Sixty Seconds/Con Air/The Rock.

I once thought Leaving Las Vegas was a sequel to Honeymoon in Vegas. Yeah, that was a miscalculation. LOL! Instead it's one of the most devastatingly deep and bleak movies about alcoholism, emotional numbness, and the underbelly of Vegas. And both Cage and Shue are amazing in their performances. In my mind Cage and Shue are forever cemented visually as these characters.
Cage's career is ruined at this point, but at least he'll always have a handful of monumental moments of pure acting bravura and excellence, of which this is one; and a well deserved Academy award.
No offence Lenlenlen1 but I would hardly call his career ruined. I looked at his movie page a few days ago and he had something like 5 or 6 movies coming up and most of those are leading roles and a lot of people said his career was over after 'The Wicker Man' flopped but he has gone on to appear in over 40 more movies since then and many of them have been leading roles and successful or not successful he gets paid for them. There are actors who would kill to get the amount of roles Nicholas Cage has been getting and Sarah Carter and Rachel Nichols rarely get any movie roles anymore (which is most likely due to ageism) but Nicholas Cage has gotten more lead roles in movies in the past decade than a heck of a lot of other actors so I don't think his career is ruined and I would say he will still be in a decade from now.

I honestly can’t decide on one, but the first role of his that comes to mind is him in the Wicker Man remake. And I still haven’t seen it.

Yes, all true, but 9 out of 10 of those movies were straight to video crap, and ALL those movies SUCKED.
Its been over for Cage for about 10 years now; and he hasn't actually "acted" for about 15. His career is in a hole that he cant get out of now. He is the leader in straight to video shlock now. Its interesting that you mention Wicker Man because pretty much everything from then on up is garbage.
Look at all the responses in this thread. NO ONE has mentioned liking anything of his from the last ten years. NO ONE. Because the last ten years or so has been garbage.
It's unfortunate because I'm a huge fan of his earlier work. And like I said before... he's delivered some fine performances in the past, of which I believe Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation are some of the most brilliant work an actor CAN deliver.
I think somewhere along the line he started having financial problems (buying and running an ISLAND will do that!) and he started accepting any old thing to make money.

Raising Arizona for me. That was a really great, nuanced performance from him.
I recently revisted Con Air and Face/Off. He was great in both of them as well.

Benjamin Gates from National Treasure 1 & 2. The best role he has ever done in my opinion.

None, of course. That's what makes him so special. He has the rare gift in which he is able to become his characters, consistently giving us so many wonderful characters one movie after the other that none of them stand out as his most iconic. Therefore I couldn't possibly choose one.
