I found Passengers starring Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt and Laurence Fishburne in the $5 bin. I thought it was interesting, the concept fascinating and the performances enjoyable. I liked the dilemma it presented that caused Jim to do what he did...and what I'm sure many would've found unacceptable bordering on reprehensible. It in a way reminded me of the dilemma someone might face if they're a survivor of a wrecked plane, for example, and the dilemma is to resort to cannibalism to survive. Not the same, but on the same order. I found some of the problems they faced somewhat unrealistic in that why would gravity suddenly disappear due to a computer malfunction when it seemed pretty clear to me that they gravity was due to the physics of the space craft spinning as it went along. A computer malfunction wouldn't "stop" the spin in mid flight. I found the problem Aurora face when trying to "swim" in the bubble a bit unrealistic given the fact that divers in the water do not "feel" gravity and if the water is murky they can't easily figure which way is up. Why would she suddenly be unable to swim underwater just because she's in a big blob of water floating weightlessly in space. And finally the amount of damage the asteroid made would have cause the ship's engine to malfunction much sooner than the two years they had it take. But I've only watched it through once, so of those problems might be answered if I watch it again.

Lead character was creepy and did something very wrong, yet due to a convenient crisis, everything works out okay. Waste of a good premise.

Would it have been more interesting or less of a waste if they hadn't had that "fortunate crisis" and had the move show their relationship ebb and flow down through the years with her coming to grips with what he did?

I hear Jen got paid $20 million for Passengers and that her salary made up 20% of the budget.

I just indicate how she made a lot of money and that this movie put a lot of trust in her to devote such a piece of the budget.

I'm sure the writer(s) could have come up with a way for their conflict to come to a head in a dramatic fashion without stretching out the story for years. Or if they just had the same crisis, but less Hollywood.

This (mostly) two person sci-fi drama is very well acted by its two leads. This two person drama plays out well until, of course, things start to go wrong with the starship and an “action” ending is devised bring the plot to a resolution. This was released during the season for major awards contenders, but it turned out to be pretty weak tea.

I watched the movie about a year ago and i think it would have been better if they had not shown that Jim woke up Aurora, It would have been better if it had been revealed to the audience when it was revealed to Aurora that Jim woke her up.
But the movie i think was ok.

I absolutely love Arrival. Have watched it often, great sci-fi on the order of 2001 as far as interesting interaction with aliens that isn't shoot 'em up, whizzing star ships, super powers, or body snatching. Not that I don't like those kinds too, but Arrival was different and well acted by the leads and supporting actors. Haven't seen the others, but will try to see them.

But the movie i think was ok. You mean like reveal it later then maybe do flashbacks to show the mental gymnastics and anguish he went through making that decision? I did think it was a little odd that the bar tender told, but there could've been other ways.

Yes and show flashbacks how he want through that decision, I think it would have been better to do it that way.
