Well based on those from the USA, like myself, I see my general 'accent' as more of the standard/non-accent type as some have clear accents like hicks etc where as I sound more like your typical American, like you see in your typical movie with Americans in them.
but some people who speak English (say maybe in certain cases in the USA/England etc) have a really heavy accent that's hard to understand at times (not usually the case, but I have seen it once in a while) as I think those who are more like that standard American accent (or maybe the British equivalent etc) tend to be a bit more standardized for English in general. like one of the more common/easier to understand types. hence, standardized.
I think you get the gist of it in that what you hear in typical movies that feature American's as long as someone speaks similar to that, your pretty much more of the one I see as the standard, or those close enough to that range.

I think it's sad though that accents are slowly dying out in America. There was a time when you definitely could tell what part of the USA someone was from by their accent. It wasn't that long ago. I realize that a lot of folks (especially older people) still retain a heavy accent, but those days seem to by dying out. I remember my mother's family, which were mainly from Danville, Virginia had a heavy southern Virginia accent. Their kids though (my 3rd or so cousins) have less of the "twang"....

and then there is the case of Lawrence Welk who speaks like no one else on the planet ,.. much less like any other Morth Dakotan.... explained in part by : "A common misconception is that Welk did not learn English until he was 21. In fact, he began learning English as soon as he started school. Dropped out of school in the fourth grade to work on the family farm. At age 21 he left home to make his way in the music business. The part of North Dakota where he lived had been settled largely by Germans from Russia; even his teachers spoke English as a second language. Parents Ludwig and Christina Welk emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, via Russia to Strasburg, ND, where Lawrence was born." Welk Link

Feologild Oakes Where have you gotten the idea that "Americans think they don't have an accent "?

Well some Americans think that Americans don`t have an accent, but of course they do as everybody has an accent. Americans think they don't have an accent because they're stupid. Of course we have accents. If the English language came to us via the British then it's the British who sound correct and we're the ones who changed the accent to something else. We even have accents amongst ourselves depending on the part of the country! Hasn't it been agreed upon that 'new world' North American English is closer to how English was pronounced in England at the time of colonization than what the English sound like today? That there was a major shift in pronunciation during Victorian times that didn't cross the Atlantic?

In the early days of the country, residents of VERY rural and isolated parts of the southern parts of the original 13 colonies persisted in speaking as English had been at the time of settlement … 1700s (deep in the Southern Hills) and some of the accents and pronunciation of certain words persist to a degree even today.

And, from the same series as the first clip, I’ve always been fond of how these gents speak:

Everyone has an accent INCLUDING Americans, EXCEPT for those who were born in the North Shore. ONLY they OFFICIALLY DON'T have an accent.
