Bowen (Dennis Quaid) and Draco (voiced by Sean Connery) from the 1996 movie Dragonheart. The fact that Dennis Quaid's dragon slayer character, Bowen, went from hating dragons to forming a friendship with one (Draco, voiced by Sean Connery) was very effective, I thought, especially with the ending - which is a very emotional/sad ending, as Bowen is forced to kill Draco in order to stop the evil King Einon (David Thewlis - the first role I ever saw him in and why I always automatically assume he's the bad guy in any movie I see him in) since they share Draco's heart, which he gave to a dying young Einon - not knowing he'd grow up to be so cruel/evil - and are thus connected in both life and death. Part of what made the film so sad was the fact that such a good-hearted soul such as Draco had to die in order to stop such an evil one (as Einon can only be killed if Draco is). Dennis Quaid totally sold the conflict Bowen felt as he made the final split-second decision to turn the axe on Draco - thus ending both his life and Einon's evil.
Nothing has really matched this^ since, for me personally. I completely bought the friendship that developed between Bowen and Draco, and it's a tribute to both actors - the fact that they were able to build this believable friendship between the characters (despite one of them being CGI'd). It's a movie I'll rewatch whenever it's on, but it never fails to get to me/pack an emotional punch by the end. I realise that the movie is intended to end with a sense of 'hope', but I'm always so saddened by Draco's death that it kind of overshadows everything else.
The other part of what makes the ending so effective is the piece of music used titled 'To The Stars'.
I think that's^ what really delivers the gut-punch at the end. It's a beautiful piece of music (I remember it having been used at the Oscars in the past during their 'In Memoriam' sections, but I always associate it with this movie). I feel Dragonheart is a very underrated movie.

Since all the great ones Catman can think of are taken: Enemy Mine, while sappy and predictable, does have its moments.

I'll second "A Boy and His Dog" with Don Johnson.

the hidden (1987) SF variation on buddy cop movie. A lot better than it might sound. Recommended.
