Talking about characters who aren't in the top three billings.
The obvious one, of course, is Hudson from ALIENS, so obvious I feel silly for even mentioning the film title.
Then there's "Cat" from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. Without his big scene, the movie is blander than the alleged Mexican food at Qdoba.
O'Neal from PLATOON raises it a great level, for many reasons. He's indicative of what half the kids were really like, trying to survive a nasty situation. He didn't make the film twice as good, because it's a fantastic film any way, but he did elevate it about 25%.
Ace and the shootist really help elevate the classic THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Again, it's such a great film, they don't make it twice as good, but they elevate it a lot.
The mayor, in his negative way, really picks up JAWS. Imagine the film without him being what he is.
As the "good bad guy" or is it "bad good guy", Miguel Ferrer adds a lot of dimensions to ROBO COP. A tremendous catalyst character.
As Esteban in THE COMMANCHEROS, Richard Devon is about seventh billing, but is another superb catalyst character. This Western is mostly about the supporting characters in a Western Dante's Divine Comedy Inferno. In a sense, he becomes the guide out of Hell.
Warren Oates as Henry Hammond turns RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY from a top 100 Western into possibly the greatest Western ever. Certainly up there with Union Pacific and Hombre, the only two that challenge it for the top spot.
Niall MacGinnis as Vogel in 49TH PARALLELL is way down the billing list, but Vogel makes the film the classic it is.
Brad Lee from TRESPASS is an obvious one.
The Japanese prisoner is certainly the catalyst in JUNGLE FIGHTERS
Joyce adds the human edge to the commandos in THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. He's about sixth billing.
Kitty brings it all the humanity in SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL, in a tragic way.

Speaking of Hudson, I'll add Chet from Weird Science and Simon from True Lies. Then for a non-Bill Paxton example from a Bill Paxton movie, Dusty from Twister.

Probably several of the best henchmen in James Bond movies fit into this category, since the top three would be Bond, the main Bond girl, and the main villain. So Oddjob and Jaws at least.

Stanley tucci in devil wears Prada I second this. But I think Emily Blunt in the same movie, is a contender.

Both James Marsden and Sam Huntington in Superman Returns. For the Richard White character, it would have been easy to make him a Billy Zane level asshole just so we can see Lois and Superman together. Credit where credit is due for making him a pretty decent guy, especially when he tries to save Lois and his not-biological son from Luthor's yacht.

Not sure if they made them twice as good, but definitely made them a lot better
Denholm Elliott - Trading Places
Jason Statham & Kurt Russell - Furious 7
Jim Carter - Transformers: The Last Knight
