And by best, I mean which version comes closest to following the book by Mary Shelly? I'm reading the book and I might wanna watch a movie based on it later. Which one should it be?

Terror of Frankenstein 1977 is the closest basic adaptation I have seen although the acting is rather cold--but I like the overall mood and atmopshere Supposedly the Hallmark version around 2003 is even closer but I hear the creature doesn't even look creepy. I haven't see a movie that captures the basic relationships in the novel faithfully.
By coincidence I am currently re-reading the book.

The 1994 version comes closest to the book but it’s not a great movie. Just watch Young Frankenstein instead.

The 1994 is way off.
The second monster is not anything like what they show.
And Walton does not beg the creature to stay with him.
Another version is Dan Curtis' Frankenstein 1973. A tv version. I thought it was the saddest. Has a clever ending. Doesn't follow the book much either though.

I would say the 1994 movie is closest to the book. It's not a bad film either, in spite of the negative press it tends to receive.
Personally, I'd recommend the Hammer Frankenstein movies. Though I should note that they are not even REMOTELY similar to the novel.

None really capture the book. The creature isn't a mute. He's not a child in a man's body. He's super ugly, but he's not evil. But he isn't a saint either. Frankenstein the creator isn't evil either. Every version makes some kind of adjustment to the basic relationship. This is the most non frills faithful cinema version of the book: www.imdb.com/title/tt0076881
