If you put Schilling in, you have to put Bob Welch who had identical stats. Schilling has a better WHIP and the post season stats but Welch has a Cy Young.
Kevin Brown also has a similar record but a better ERA. And you'd also have to put in Tim Hudson and Orel Herschiser, who also have similar records.
I think it's time to start up a new Hall of Fame.

it's the bloody sock story.
people love a 'warrior' story - i.e. fighting against all odds................
schillings bloody sock story will live in infamy over the years and grow and grow until it's his leg which is practically hanging off and he faces amputation after the game after a pitching coach came in to apply leeches in the 1st but they didn't stop the infection/bleeding/cival war in congo.................but schilling fought on

Schilling’s peak years were pretty dominant. Hershiser had that one ridiculous season but how good was he otherwise? Doesn’t Schilling also have 3000 k’s?

A$$hole of the Universe. Prick puts a towel over his head because he can't bare to watch his teammate come in for relief. Granted - Williams gave a game winning homer to Carter in the WS in '93. It was horsesh*t like this that made me despise this d*ck. This ain't Nick Foles hugging Alshon Jeffrey for dropping a pass in the playoffs pretty much ending the season telling him he loves him. Great pitcher - yep - if he gets in - go in as a Red Sox player you smug arrogant douche ...........

I think Schilling being a right wing nut job and a total dick influences the voters.

For just baseball I’m like 51%-49% that he’s a hall of famer.

Ahhhh, Welch's Cy Young, which he won due to being on an awesome team and he wasn't even the best pitcher in his own rotation. He had a fine year, don't get me wrong, but Dave Stewart and Roger Clemens were both materially better that year. Schilling also had about 1,200 more Ks than did Welch and over 300 fewer BBs (in about 170 more innings). Plus, Schilling's career occurred during a more offensively charged era so to say they had identical stats because they had similar win totals and virtually the same ERA is a bit unfair. I'm not one of the ones championing Schilling, so perhaps this rather meaningless to the convo, but I don't think the comparison is a fair one is all.

I may win the award for biggest dick of the decade but.........
I never root against anybody
never root for the downfall of other or others to get sick
cancer is no laughing joke - think we've all have had family members that have gone through it........
that being said - isn't mouth cancer (i.e ballplayers chews - tobacco) one of the most treatable cancers out there like skin cancer?
before I get eggs thrown at me - my uncle had his lower jaw removed........
but - didn't Schill kinda put himself in the limelight getting attention for himself again being a drama queen?
hey bub - I just had a couple of moles removed and I'm awaiting biopsies...............

C'mon screamingtreefrogs, Asshole of the Universe is a huge achievement. Think of how many assholes you know. Now think about how many more there must be just in your country, then the planet, and then the Universe? It's almost HOF worthy in and of itself.
To the OP, the main reason is that Derek Jeter is the only new player of note on the ballot next year, meaning that non- PED guys who were close or already had big jumps are every chance of massively improving their votes. Larry Walker's another benefactor. I think 2021 is weaker still, so he'll probably go either next year or the year after.

I said non-PED guys, which would be Walker and Schilling. They played in the era but there's never been any real thought they used. Schilling's stats weren't out of the ordinary and Walker's 383 HR doesn't suggest unusual power, particularly in that era. Bonds, Sosa and Clemens are the main ones whose vote has a ceiling due to known or suspected PED use. A certain percentage of voters just aren't going to touch them meaning the Schillings and the Walkers will go past them in a weak year, which the next two will be.

He is a conservative, though. That eliminates him right there.
