what a masterpiece. i waited to get the chance to see it on the big screen for the first time and today was the day. loved it. was surprised at the choice of music - felt more contemporary than i assumed it would have been but loved it anyways. the entry to the Copacabana club is a phenomenal scene, same with Jimmys moment of decision to kill Mory. Simple detail of De Niros face and its so telling. Oh and the carnage montage to Layla. All very very good. Originally I thought I liked Scarface better but now I am on the verge. Have to sleep on it. oh also - so many memes and references in other works now make sense

Congratulations and welcome to the club!
Scorsese usually includes pretty good music. One detail I always look for is Scorsese's mother, Catherine. She's in no less than eight of his films and I just spotted her again last night in The Godfather: Part III. I didn't know she was in that one, too. She always has a small role. In Goodfellas she plays Tommy's mother.

I used to be a big fan of it but now it's pretty average (5/10). personally I like Scorsese's Casino (1995) (7.5-8/10) more.
I used to be a pretty huge fan of Scarface to but at least Scarface (7/10) is good enough for me to remain among My Favorite Movies.

Yet, I agree about Casino. I always found that to be the better of the two films.

It's Scorsese's masterpiece, so glad you experienced it on the big screen. I had the chance to see it years ago when it first came out on the big screen. I talked my friend into going to see Jacob's Ladder or something instead. I was a f#&kin' moron back then!

Yeah I know hos soundtracks are good but I expected music that would be from the years when the story was happening or maybe be more italian o clasical seeming like in Godfather. (have not seen yet) But really enjoyed those musical choices. Gee I just

After shoving the dead guy (assumed dead) in the trunk they make a quick side stop for a bite to eat like it's any other day. Then they joke about the guy they just killed. All the while mom wonders why Tommy can't settle down with a nice girl. That scene said it all about their psychopathy and double life.

For me Nora, I would prefer to watch Scarface - 83', but much of this is also born out of nostalgic value as well. I don't get the same feeling about Goodfellas - 90'.
Goodfellas is a very well written and skillfully performed and acted film. The thing is, like some other Scorsese films, I find them also very arrogant in approach and often wonder why he chooses to make these films about these despicable characters, yet also make it seem cool and\or hip, and even in a sense champions them.
Scarface comes across as taking a different approach, in that one is not really on the side of the main antagonist, we are third person observers, and we witness his downward spiral into crazed egomania, madness and psychosis. Scarface shows us the consequence of sociopathy and greed, what it attracts and it allows us to sympathize with those he surrounds himself with, even if their own actions are dubious, and whom he also bullies and treats like dirt.
I never really got all the fuss about the violence in Scarface, as it wasn't anymore violent or bloody than other similar films that had come before it, or after it. The Godfather - 72' was more graphic and I would even say that Goodfellas contained stronger graphic violence. I too was thinking> is this glorifying the mob and making its members too sympathetic? Especially with the closing monologue it plays into thinking he would have kept doing it if he could and the only thing Henry regretted is that he couldnt do it anymore. Scarface is brilliant this way, it takes you on this downward spin that gets fucked up way earlier than in goodfellas and also shows you more of the down side of that world. But Goodfellas may be superior in the craft, in how it was written and shot and edited. I will have to see both once more to decide which one I liked better.

All the while mom wonders why Tommy can't settle down with a nice girl. That scene said it all about their psychopathy and double life. Once you become accustomed to killing people I suppose it really is just any other day in that kind of life. Henry's wife, Karen, narrates how she knew they were criminals, but she convinced herself that "it all seemed so normal". And Tommy's mother seems willingly clueless as to what exactly they do for a living.
We see this in other gangster films, too. I think it demonstrates that no one is all good or all bad. Sometimes even psychopaths still exhibit what we consider as good human qualities. I know what you mean, though. It's the ease with which they move between the worlds which is difficult for those of us with a conscience to grasp.

I like theaters as much as anyone but I'll never understand why someone would wait to see a movie contingent on that theater experience.

Not to mention how these guys had the ability to party with someone and act like they were their best buddy knowing that in just a few hours they'd be snuffing them out.
