for me the experience of seeing at home on a smaller screen just diminishes the experience to the point where i am just not willing to do it... does this mean you rarely watch movies at home? i never watch movies at home.

I like theaters as much as anyone but I'll never understand why someone would wait to see a movie contingent on that theater experience. The cinema can be a more immersive experience, unless one has their own home theater set up and decent sized image. Its definitely more immersive. It’s my preferred method of movie watching. However I will watch films on TV as well.

what a masterpiece. i waited to get the chance to see it on the big screen for the first time and today was the day. loved it. was surprised at the choice of music - felt more contemporary than i assumed it would have been but loved it anyways. the entry to the Copacabana club is a phenomenal scene, same with Jimmys moment of decision to kill Mory. Simple detail of De Niros face and its so telling. Oh and the carnage montage to Layla. All very very good. Originally I thought I liked Scarface better but now I am on the verge. Have to sleep on it. oh also - so many memes and references in other works now make sense JUST NOW?!? JUST NOW?!? What were you waiting on?! What were you waiting on?! for the movie to come to NY cinemas again.

You deprived yourself of a masterpiece just because you couldn't see it in a theatre. If that's the case then I wonder what other masterpieces you've not seen.

Didn't care too much for it. In part because I disliked the characters, in part because of the classic rock soundtrack - a tiresome Scorsese signature. 6/10.

Give me a genre to narrow it down. Drama. Okay, trying to stay with films that are mostly dramas and not dramedy, scifi, etc. 80's: Ordinary People Stand By Me Witness Steel Magnolias 70's: Rocky Taxi Driver The Deer Hunter Midnight Express Don't Look Now (kind of crosses over into psychological thriller) 60's: The Hustler West Side Story (also a musical) The Graduate Doctor Zhivago I'll stop there, although there are so many excellent dramas going all the way back to the 30's, but I know not everyone is in to classic films. Really, anything with Marilyn, Audrey, and Cary Grant. I especially love Penny Serenade.

Love Midnight Express. And the Graduate is my all time favorite movie. I must have seen that probably a 100 times throughout my life.

The Color Purple is another one everyone needs to see at least once. Whoopie was robbed an Oscar for that one.

Those are probably the 4 that would most unanimously be called "must sees", the others are a little more personal, but still "classics". I've added a brief reasoning behind those selections to my OP. Give Kane a go if you get a chance, it's anything but boring.

I have seen Citizen Kane twice Nora and both times I found it to be quite a slog and un-involving. I don't get all the fuss and technically excellent for its time, but that is where much of its praise stems from. I am glad How Green Is My Valley won best picture. Maybe Kane isn't for everyone, but I think most with the slightest interest in film can get something out of it, even if it is only the technical/historical significance stuff. I've seen it three times (never on the big screen) and enjoyed all of them. I love pretty much all of Welles' stuff though, one of my favorite "classic" Hollywood directors.
