The best looking of the original trilogy. For a film shot in 1979, its held up quite well.

This movie was probably the least involved Lucas was in the filming of any of them, coincidence that it's the best looking?

I read somewhere that Empire is actually George's least favorite of the original trilogy. That really wouldn't surprise me, since it's widely thought of as the best in the entire saga. He comes across as having a curious disdain for his fans, and seems to enjoy being contrary to them.

Every frame of the original trilogy is "a painting." It seemed they were imitating "2001:A Space Odyssey. Then all that dignity went out the window with the prequels and sequels. It's depressing.

I would have broke the bank to bring back Irvin Kershner to direct 'The Return Of The Jedi' but he was burnt out. If the prequels had been put into production in the late 1980s, he would have returned to the fold. Roger Corman understood Kershner's abilities better than anybody.
