In hindsight I agree Illyria served no great purpose in the show, so why kill Fred to make room for Illyria? But I do think it was because she was meant to have a bigger part to play or a more vital part in the next season, I mean Angel declared all out war on Wolfram & Hart and they set a dragon after him for heavens sake, Fred's awesome and all but she cant take no dragon down.
I think you might be right about that but didn't they know the show was being cancelled before they filmed that episode? I thought Joss found that out fairly early when he asked for an early renewal for 'Angel' that it was going to be cancelled and Joss changed the plans and decided to end it continued 'cause he was angry over it but I am not sure. I think after they killed Cordelia off they should have let Fred live 'cause they were killing too many characters off. Yes, it was still the same actress playing the role so they didn't get rid of Amy Acker but Fred should have stayed up until the end. I wonder what Season 6 would have been like if it had went through and if Wesley would have been killed off or not. I read somewhere Adam Baldwin's character was meant to stay on longer and play a bigger role and Gunn was going to become a vampire and lead a gang of vampires after them until they gave him back his soul. They already filmed those episodes where Fred died prior to cancellation, like I think they got cancelled in mid to late Feb & Fred dies at the start of March, also Illyria does still play a factor in the rest of the season so even if they could reshoot stuff they wouldn't have had the time to rewrite everything.

According to the Buffy Wikia page for the episode "Underneath," under behind the scene they note that "It was during the filming of the basement fight scene that showrunners informed the crew that the series had been officially cancelled."
"Smile Time" is noted as the first episode to air after the show's cancellation had been announced; with "A Hole in the World" being the next episode. So that part of the story was a done deal. And given production schedules, the next several scripts would have already been in pre-production and too late to radically change; which is why it's not until several episodes later that the story seems to take a left turn into the mini-arc that finishes out the season.

Thanks for letting me know both of you. I wasn't sure how far ahead in advance the showrunners of 'Angel' knew about the show being cancelled but that makes sense now and even though I wasn't a fan of the way they ended the show I think the final season was pretty good and I enjoyed re-watching it recently and hope it does return. 'Angel' coming back now as a limited TV Show or movie would be awesome to see and there are so many things they could do with it. They could loosely play out the 'After the Fall' comic books or they could go with something completely different. Either way, I think we will definitely see 'Buffy' return in some shape or form whether it is with 'Angel' or the 'Buffy' reboot and a show like that is too popular to stay dead when so many others are returning.

If they brought back Angel now it would replace Supernatural on CW. CW is going to need another Horror tv show to fill the void and revival of Angel would be a ratings draw.
