In James Cameron’s Titanic, the famous romance that’s depicted between Rose and Jack never seems to receive any criticism, despite the age difference between the two characters. Rose is established as being 17 years old, while Jack is 20, yet the two of them are engaged in a sexual relationship. Why hasn’t anyone called out James Cameron for this?

In those days it was common for teenaged girls to be married. If you weren't wed by twenty you were verging on old maid status. Billy Zane seemed even older still.

The age of consent in England is 16. Also, the movie doesn't portray JACK as someone taking advantage of someone younger. In fact, until I read your post, I had no idea about their ages.

Most women who got married at that time were in their 20s . It was very rare for people under 20 to get married and it was mostly royalty and nobility that got married very young. Common men and women got mainly married when they were in their 20s.

To be honest...I’d shrug at that age gap even now in America. I have no moral problem with that in today’s society let alone in the early 1900s.

It just seems weird that everyone was just okay with a 17 year old stripping nude and havin sex... I guess while we’re at it, I have to ask: why is everyone okay with Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight? Doesn’t that film have a handjob scene between two minors?

The character may have been 17 but Kate Winslet was in her early 20s so it was a woman in her 20ss who stripped naked and had fake sex not a 17 year old girl.

I'll just say that both laws and society's attitude toward age issues and sexuality is incredibly nonsensical. If the understanding is that only the worst kind of monsters would breach these laws (and they are indeed treated like the worst of the worst), why are say the US and European countries on friendly terms, when Europe has significantly lower age of consent laws? It makes absolutely no sense. So someone having sexual relations with a 14 year old girl is Satan incarnate in New York, but over in Germany it's perfectly ok and fine?

Well, he died, and she had to live with the memory of that, so they paid for their sexual indiscretion.

You post like someone out to gain enemies, usually with name calling insults. You probably will say you don't care, but why bother posting here if your goal is to vent on internet strangers? Maybe you like feeling superior, although flinging insults right out of the gate is a red flag for unintelligence. A healthy debate need not be in the gutter.
