I always thought he looked at Phil throughout the film with a knowing glance and he'd kind of laugh under his breath or shake his head.
Like, maybe he was going to be tied in to this but as the film evolved and changed ... Like The Breakfast Club evolved over production into a coming of age film.
Groundhog Day could have been a typical romantic comedy with more goofy stuff, but the second act with rejection from Rita and the Suicide attempts, that moment he says "Everyday I wake up, and it's February 2nd, and there is nothing I can do about it"... I get chills. One of my top 5 favorite films...

I think that the bartender has just seen guys hitting on women so often that he is just reacting to yet more attempts and he laughs and shakes his head to himself.
He watches and reacts to Larry pretty much the same way.
Annual watch on or around 2/2 and always find something more in it !

I think I read somewhere where the writers hadn't decided whether to have his condition (reliving the same day over and over) be due to some sort of curse/magic influence that they disclose at some point, or to just leave it as a mystery. They decided to leave it a mystery, but they might've had the bartender look that way so that, IF they had it be a curse and made that known, his "look" would've been part of that story. Or it might just be that he's "seen it all" and knows he's just hitting on Rita.

No he doesn't know. If he knew they would have put something else in the movie. You could theorize that piano teacher knows because she says he's my student.

I always assumed they implied he went to his piano lesson that day, like any other day, so she "called" him her student, even though it would've been obvious to her that he already knew how to play and "one" lesson wouldn't have resulted in that level of skill.

She just wanted to ride his coattails. She's a local and she teaches piano lessons. It's good business to tell people "He's my student" she probably asked him if she could tell people and he said "sure." Now that he's changed.

Yeah that is possible but it doesn't really make sense because he did so much that day. That's a task he didn't have to do on that last day. I think it was just a mistake in the movie. Or maybe the piano teacher was a witch and was the one who orchestrated the whole thing.

For me , the piano lessons are one of the clues to just how long this event had been going on. WE know that he truly was a total non-player when he started and yet he became an expert .. that takes ages to accomplish. Phil: "I'll pay you $1000"

More thoughts on the piano teacher … it's quite likely that he kept going to her to improve his playing r .... she being unaware that he had ever been there before would be proud of her pupil and happy to brag on it a bit !

rizdek yep ,.., that's it ! Thanks ! and on later visits he probably tells her that he needs some help on some fine point in piano playing and is thus "technically" her student !

rizdek yep ,.., that's it ! Thanks ! and on later visits he probably tells her that he needs some help on some fine point in piano playing and is thus "technically" her student ! But as I understand the story, we are to assume her character, is not supposed to have any recollection of any "previous" visits...all she has lived is this ONE day. So any interaction that might lead her to say that he is her student had to have happened THAT day. Same goes for Rita and Larry.

rizdek yep … he turned up that one day … spent some time with his teacher fine tuning some technique and was her student that day ... and so "braggable".

She looks way too proud for it just to be a one day tune up. Why not include that scene or mention it? Phil could have said to her thanks for the tune up today.
