took place 15-20 years earlier with the original cast de-aged with computer technology, showing the events that led to the return of the "Empire" and then Episode 8 and 9 take place 15-20 years later finishing up the story? Sort of like The Prequel trilogy.

No no no.
That would mean we'd never have tried TFA & TLJ... those would've been far harsher what ifs without them.

But the sequel trilogy is not complete yet.

I wouldn't want have wanted the cast members from the OT to be de-aged. Keep them as they are. However, I would have much preferred if J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan came up with a better story than a remake of A New Hope.

Would the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy have been better if the first entry, Episode 7, took place 15-20 years earlier with the original cast de-aged with computer technology, showing the events that led to the return of the "Empire" and then Episode 8 and 9 take place 15-20 years later finishing up the story? Sort of like The Prequel trilogy. I don't think that would necessarily have helped. IMO, this is what would have helped the Sequel Trilogy: - Have a complete story planned out well in advance with a beginning, middle, and end.
- Start with the focus on the OT characters. Let them be characters rather than marketing gimmicks.
- Gradually introduce new characters and give them arcs. Have them earn our respect. Don't try to elevate them by denigrating the OT characters.
- Respect the OT characters and the lore.

The RESPECT part is key. I agree with all of alpha128's points.

Funny, I was thinking a few weeks ago that having a film that shows what transpired before The Force Awakens is what Episode VII should have been. It feels like a movie that writes itself: seeing the Battle of Jakku, Leia's role in the New Republic, Luke training a new Jedi Order, and explaining where the First Order comes off. Then, the next film would have introduced Rey and Finn. I pretty much agree with alpha128's points. We are two films into the trilogy, and the story doesn't feel like it was planned out in advance.
