5 mins or less.
Which speaks volumes about my attention span.
They don't have to be full on action, but they do have to be interesting otherwise I won't watch anymore.

I generally choose films carefully so I do not shut it off unless it has no subtitles. If it is really bad I think: I better watch it to understand why it sucks so the experience wasn't a complete loss. At worst I fastforward through parts of it.

I usually stick it out to the end. I've only bailed on a handful of films and those have been musicals and shakespeare adaptations. All the rest i've seen to the bitter end

As a general rule for me... no less than 30 minutes but I try to go around 40 minutes before turning a movie off if it's totally boring and then ill give it my usual 2/10 score (I only give out 1/10's to movies I greatly dislike but these are quite rare because as a general rule a 2/10 score from me is the bottom of the barrel in general because I typically consider boring to be the worst crime a movie can commit). but with that said... I have made exceptions here and there to where I turned a movie off before the 30min mark but these are quite limited as there is roughly 160 movies (tops) (out of the 2,250+ total movies I have seen) that I could not finish due to boredom. but out of those, only a very limited amount would have been turned off before the 30min mark. but those people who turn a movie off after 10-15min are is a bit too quick to legitimately write a movie off as boring because I think it takes at least 15 minutes or so to START to get a legitimate feel of a movie. but I will say by around 15 minutes into a movie, especially if the movies end up hitting boring status (boring as in can't finish the movie), you can usually tell if a movie has a decent chance to get turned off due to boredom. but still, I prefer to go at least 30min+ as that's giving a movie a fair chance to recover (since 30-40minutes is roughly 1/3rd of most movies which is a good portion of a movie) because I generally can't turn a movie off and call it legitimately boring until it starts holding that level for a reasonable length of time as only hitting a small 5-10min boring-ish stretch, or something like that, it's not enough to completely ruin a movie. but when a movie holds that boring level for 30 minutes or more, than at that point there is serious damage done to the overall movie etc. so basically given the options in the poll... 15-30min should be the BARE minimum to legitimately write off a movie as truly boring because, like I was saying, it takes around 15minutes just to START to get a legitimate feel of the overall movie. hell, I am surprised people even bother with the last option in the poll that says, 'generally don't quit a movie even if it takes multiple attempts to finish' as that's simply a waste of time and not worth it. because if your forcing yourself to watch a movie THAT much, clearly the movie has failed for you overall to the point it's no where near a Thumbs Up at that point. also, I noticed for me there is usually a fine line between a 2/10 and a 4/10 for me as that 3/10 is sort of a odd score for me as it happens but usually if a movie drops below a 4/10 it will end up hitting the 2/10 even though I have finished some movies that might not be outright boring, but might just be bad (and the like), and they happen to hit a 3/10 as those 3/10's are not quite boring for me, so it's not a TOTAL loss, but at the same time they are worse than a 4/10 (below average). basically here is my Thumbs Down level scoring system... 5/10 - Average (while these are ultimately a Thumbs Down, they are usually at least decent enough for a one time viewing and did not waste my time) 4/10 - Below Average (movie start to waste my time here but at the same time they could be worse) 3/10 - Failure (I finished watching these, but they are just bad etc) 2/10 - Boring (this is my typical bottom of the barrel score because I consider boring to be the worst crime a movie can commit as a general rule) 1/10 - Greatly Dislike (barely anything is THIS bad for me) lordquesterjones That's simply WAY to fast as doing that would end up turning off a fair amount of average-ish movies because there are a fair amount of movies out there in general where you might hit some semi-boring stretches for like 5min or less. even for people who like to turn off movies somewhat quick, I would figure give a movie a BARE MINIMUM of 15-20minutes because I feel going any sooner than that, it's just way to quick to judge a movie simply because it takes around 15-20minutes to start to get a feel of a movie based on ones overall interest in the movie by that point. because if I turned a movie off and called it boring based on only a 5 min stretch, or anything close to that, I would have turned off quite a bit more movies than I have which would skew things a bit too much towards the negative. p.s. but I guess at the same time... if someones free time is very limited, they might want to make the most of it and in this regard I can't really blame someone too much for turning movies off a bit too quickly and moving onto the next one. but still, at least try to make 15min or so at the very least because any sooner than that, is just not giving a movie a fair chance. Primemovermithrax Pejorative But at that point, the movie was basically turned off anyways because once someone start fast forwarding the movie has clearly failed.

15 to 20 minutes. It has nothing to do with attention span. I know so much about movies that I can tell very quickly when a movie is going nowhere.

I virtually never quit on a movie. I haven't since that episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark when the babysitter gets the kid to read books and he hates it but the book comes to life with witches and ghosts and the only way to stop them is to finish the book. Babysitter warned once you start a book you really should finish it, so I applied that to movies.

But at that point, the movie was basically turned off anyways because once someone start fast forwarding the movie has clearly failed. Sure, but there may be something that piques my interest towards the end.
There was a movie I watched recently that had a slow start, but it got better and I ended up liking it.

I only stop a movie if I'm on the edge of falling asleep (sometimes the movie is too boring; other times I'm tired due to something else), but I finish it the next day. No matter what, I always finish them. You don't have the right to judge a movie if you haven't seen it in its entirety. Plus, there are many movies that start out bad and then get better.

I usually try to watch a movie in its entirety so I can properly judge it. It wouldn't seem fair to criticize a movie by the first forty minutes unless the movie is really terrible and doesn't let up.

It varies depending on the movie. If it’s a movie that I didn’t call for watching and doesn’t peak my interest, I’ll zone out.
But most times I’ll watch a whole movie.

I usually try to give it at least 20 minutes. I hate to give up on a film. The Last One I shut off was The Happy Time Murders.

I rarely give up on a movie, even if I'm finding it boring. I may watch it in instalments, but abandoning it completely is highly uncommon for me.

Vits Ill disagree here for sure. because as long as someone does not turn off the movie TOO quickly due to boredom I think it's more than fair for them to judge it without seeing the whole thing. like if a movie is totally boring for say the first 30-40 minutes or so it's pretty safe to say that movie is not going to reach Thumbs Up status at that point even if it happens to get lucky and recover to some degree because at that point there is simply too much damage done to the overall movie. so as long as someone don't turn off a movie TOO quickly, I think they can definitely judge it once it reaches that genuinely boring level (like watching paint dry etc) for a solid portion of a movie. because say 30 to 40 minutes... that's roughly 1/3rd of most movies and that's simply way too much time for a movie to be THAT bad. While I agree some movies might start off a bit weaker and get better I have yet to see something that was genuinely boring for say the first 30-40minutes recover to Thumbs Up level (i.e. something I would score a 6 or higher) as I figure about the best these could do is a 4/10 (below average) tops. one movie comes to mind that I thought was totally boring for about the first 38 minutes or so but then just barely became watchable for me to finish was... District 9 (2009) (I nearly turned this off). so while my final score for that was a 4/10(below average) instead of a 2/10(boring), so there was some difference there, it's not something I would worry about much because the movie was still pretty weak overall and this is more of a exception to the norm in my experience. on the flip side of that... I have seen some movies, which I basically consider more of a fluke, start off fairly solid for like 1hour+ etc (call it roughly half of the movie) and then drop off a cliff eventually, and not recover, to the point I could not finish them (i.e. Interstellar/Inception). but outside of some rare exceptions like those listed above... I don't really see my interest in movies fluctuate too much as my interest in solid movies tends to hold pretty steady overall and even crap movies my interest in those tends to be pretty low overall to. basically one can just tell by the overall feeling they get when watching a movie and I rate accordingly as anything I score below a 5/10 (NOTE: 5/10 is average for me(but ultimately a Thumbs Down)) is pretty much crap even though there are varying degrees of crap. but basically... you can usually get a rough idea of how a typical movie will turn out after the first 20-30min given my interest levels in it at that point. but, off the top of my head, I have noticed that movies that I ultimately end up turning off due to boredom I can usually tell if a movie will reach that status based in my interest in a movie by around the 15-20min mark as if it's quite low at that point there is a decent chance ill end up pulling the plug on it in additional 20 minutes of time or so (basically inline with my typical 30min+, but usually try to go to around 40min rule before ill write a movie off as boring as score it my usual 2/10).
p.s. there is only about 160 movies TOPS out of the 2,250+ total movies I have seen that I could not finish due to boredom. so that's only about 7% of everything I have seen. so it's not a common occurance but it happens on average of about 1 out of every 14 movies or so I have seen over the long run.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on movies in general
hell, I would probably even apply that to movies that end up reaching that boring status to the point I can't finish them due to boredom as while I almost always give a movie 30min+ minimum before ill turn it off and score it my usual 2/10 due to boredom, I would say by about 20minutes you can usually tell if a movie has a good chance of being turned off in another 10-20minutes past that initial 20min range.
