Getting that Oscar nomination for "Creed" made him realize how far off the rails his acting career has fallen since "Rocky" (1976) and "First Blood" ... I have a feeling he wants wants to start handing in Oscar worthy roles before he dies.

Isn't he too old for this franchise at 70 now?

The first one was okay. I appreciated that it did some old-school action, or at least made it look that way. And the film is worth watching just for Mickey Rourke's scene, which honestly comes across like somebody plucked it out of a MUCH better movie and shoved it into this one.
But for the sequels they felt the need to drop all the practical effects and make the same CGI bullshit cartoon action that every other action movie has done for the last ten years or so. Plus they seem determined to cram in every actor who ever so much as watched an action movie.
I watched Commando the other day. Holy crap, that film is so GOOD compared to modern action movies. Just Arnie smashing everything that gets in his way and killing mooks by the dozen. Find a young Arnie and make a couple of movies like that!

The franchise must be on the way out then or something else. He is getting on now could be anything really that made him go. Shame really it was dumb, fun, retro action.

I'll miss the movies. I liked the more old-school feel of them. But I've noticed he's been getting his EXPENDABLES buddies in his other movies since... so not like any of them are hurting for work. I'm just sad we won't get E4 since supposedly Pierce Brosnan was one of the people Sly was courting to be in it, along with (according to old rumors) Liam Neeson, Gina Davis, Viggo Mortensen, Kurt Russell, Rutger Hauer- plus keeping Ford & Snipes.

Worst movie franchise ever. Typical standard post, from a mainstream kid.

The first one was more of a real movie than just about anything else made at the time. Couple of problems with it was the lack of real tension. The bad guys just werent that bad. Too PC.
And the ending needed a boost. The most logical ending would have been that Eric Roberts character survived, made it back to the US, kidnaps what's his name's girlfriend, and Mickey Rourke saves the day with a knife throw and some help from assumed dead Dolph.
By comparison, Charles Bronson was kicking asses and throwing people into vats of acid without being triggered by the same age.

Bummer (as I enjoyed the movies for what they were) but I think they ran their course. I'm in my mid 30's now and still remember talking on the schoolyard with my friends about how great it would be to see the classic action stars in the same movies. Glad Stallone made it happen.
He doesn't get the credit he deserves for writing, directing and being an overall creative force. I like him as an actor as well. He probably doesn't need anymore money...I hope he makes a few more great films before he hangs it up.

i really enjoyed parts 2 and 3. i thought they delivered cheesy over the top heavy machinery and muscles action. i wish part 3 had a r rated version with at least cgi blood added. but it is still very rewatchable for me and i love mel gibson, wesley snipes and antonio banderes in it. no apologies.

He did write the original Rocky's screenplay and was once taken seriously as an actor. He was also quite good in the 1997 crime drama Copland and now that he's 70, I'd rather see him do more of those kinds of understated character roles than generic action movies and endless Rocky sequels. As for the Expendables series, eh whatever. I always felt the concept behind this series was cool, but the execution was lacking.

I had a series of disagreements over the script of the first movie. Beyond awful.
