For better or worse, who are some movie characters who completely changed over the course of a franchise?
If you compared the character in the first/earliest film(s) with how they are in the latest/last film(s), it would be like seeing two different characters even though they're supposed to be the same character.
For example:
John McClane - Die Hard Martin Riggs - Lethal Weapon Luke Skywalker - Star Wars

Rocky Balboa. His IQ shoots up by at least about 20 points between 2 and 3.

Maybe Drago hit him a little too hard (been awhile since I watched the films). My contribution to the thread is "Dom" from Fast and the Furious. He goes from fairly small time street racer/thief, to super hero in the last few films.

Mothra also changed quite a bit, as did King Ghidora.

I think these are perfect examples of "for better or worse". Riggs went from a suicidal maniac who was a danger to everyone around him, friend or foe, to someone who found his purpose to live again, first thru his adopted family of the Murtaughs (and Leo to an extent) to eventually having his own real family again with Lorna and their baby. McClane on the other hand went from a loving husband and father who didn't want to be stuck in the situations he was in but was fiercely protecting his wife, to a jaded, cynical, bitter, angry asshole. I'll leave it from my descriptions for you to decide which I thought was the better change.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader did a pretty good changing act as well.

The last DIE HARD I saw was 4, but he seemed like a different person. No jokes, like it was influenced by UNFORGIVEN
Chucky changed a lot from Child's Play 1 to Child's Play 4 where he became a mellow sort of road trip character.

Miss Moneypenny. Through most of the Bond series, she is just a secretary (so far as we know). Recently she was reimagined as a field agent.

Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) undergoes a pretty big character transformation over the course of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, culminating with her becoming a ‘Pirate King’ in the third film.

DR. EVIL went from a funny yet threatening villain to someone who always makes a fool of himself.

Well by the later movies he's more or less an anti-hero as opposed to villain.

Plus a car collusion with an armored truck if I'm remembering the chase scene proper.
