I love this movie (as I loved reading the play), and, IMHO, Irene Dunne should have won the Oscar as Best Actress of 1948. But then, I never was a fan of Jane Wyman.
I only wish there were more details regarding Mama's meatball recipe in sour cream sauce. They sound delicious! Anything like Swedish meatballs?

It's episodic ( Wasn't the original source short stories which the author then turned into a play?) but it doesn't feel episodic because of the strong characterization of Mama. Irene Dunne just killed this, all her charm all her humour, everything she knew went into this.
The support cast is just as good . The strange sub story about Uncle Chris is lovely, quirky ,strange like real family stories.

And a nod also to character actress Ellen Corby, wonderful as plain spinster 'Aunt Trina' finally finding a man to love and who appreciates her (Candice's dad Edgar Bergen, sans Charlie McCarthy). She got an Oscar nomination out of it, as did Bel Geddes (which may have split their vote -- although Claire Trevor was the favorite pick anyway).

Easily at the very top of my list of George Stevens's best work, bringing the most out of every last player (even the usually-wooden Philip Dorn, here conveying uncommon warmth and wisdom), and with his unobtrusive, minimalist and straightforward directorial style displaying gentle and memorable sensitivity.
I must add a word for the great Oskar Homolka: in no film fortunate enough for him to have been among its cast can there be enough Oskar Homolka: every moment of his on film is a treasure (the same can be said about countrymen Walter Slezak, Anton Walbrook and Joseph Schildkraut; what is it about Viennese actors?).

Maybe it's the waltzes, . The play was first staged in 1944, with Mady Christians as Mama and an upcoming young actor named Marlon Brando as Nels. Joan Tetzel originated the role of Katrin; IRL, she was married to Oskar Homolka, and they passed away within two months of each other.

When I was a kid the "Norwegian Hospital" had a benefit at the local movie house. The cast of MAMA the TV series based on I Remember Mama the film were the guests of honor and the big draw. My mom was on the committee and we got to go backstage and behind the movie screen while the original picture was playing. I remember that I met and was spoken to by Dick Van Patten and it was years and years later that I recognized him on "Eight is Enough". The souvenir program is somewhere in the archives of treasures laughingly called "the attic".

I adored Mama on TV. Peggy Wood, Dick van Patten( what a looker!) and Robin Morgan as Dagmar. With her cute pigtails, my favorite she later became a prominent feminist leader in the late 60's

Great background info on Homolka, Tetzel and the B'way production (about which I was aware only of Homolka's having originated his film role in it). I love stuff like this, and I thank you for waltzing in with it.

Thank you, Dog. BTW, I adore your avatar. Is that sweet pooch yours? How nice of you: yes, that's Duncan the Delinquent Dachshund. He's 8 now, but looks the same (aren't pets lucky to spend most of their lives not showing their age?). And as I mentioned to spider, don't let that innocent face fool you: he's a passive/aggressive little tyrant, and runs the house (except for the kitties, of course: they don't let him get away with anything...unlike we human animals; we're spoilers of a different sort).

I was surprised to find that the tv series Mama was only 11 episodes. I seem to remember watching it often.

One of my favorite movies and my only favorite Irene Dunne performance. The acting by all of the actors was so natural and I esp loved the close-ups.

Similar in a lot of respects to Swedish meatballs, except the gravy in Swedish have sour cream in the gravy, and sometimes a few teaspoons of jam, typically ligonberry, red current or raspberry.

Jam on meatballs? I honestly don't think I'd like that.

Jam on meatballs? I honestly don't think I'd like that. It's a smidge - one to three teaspoons - in the gravy. It's barely noticeable, and gives a nice depth of flavor. It doesn't taste sweet.

TheOriginalPinkyThere is a hot dish that sounds sooooooo awful. Ground beef just rolled into balls and browned, sauerkraut, brown sugar, cranberry sauce (whole berry) plus this and that. Baked in the oven. it SOUNDS inedible but mmmmmmmmm ! on Noodles or potatoes. It might be a Norwegian receipe. The lady who served it had had a Norwegian mom but the kraut sounds more German.

Try German rouladin. Made with flank steak, onions, pickles and bacon. Sounds awful, right? It's delicious ,
