I mean, you are on some random forum site, and you encounter someone who turns out to live close to you.
For me I was on a large tourism forum and randomly talking to people, and I learned that someone I was speaking with lived literally a block from me on the next street.
I forgot how it happened but it wasn't aided by any kind of filtering beyond region (a forum devoted to Western Canada tourism).

Yeah, Muttonbuster who used to post here lived in Redondo Beach, a few miles from where I live now and where I work now and where I used to get drunk and stoned on the beach every night. There's this Filipino fool named AJ Goodfellow who used to go to the same gay bar I go to, The Dolphin Bar, again in Redondo Beach. I've never run into either in real life though.

Back in the day (early 2000s) when chat rooms were a thing, I met a young lady in one of the old MSN chats who lived probably 15-20 miles from me. We clicked, became internet buddies and eventually got together for lunch. We're still Facebook friends to this day. Also met another "woman" in a chat of dubious nature, who probably lived within five miles of me based on her somewhat vague info...but I never cared to chat much with "her", for reasons the quotations should make obvious.

When I was a moderator on a music channel's forum there were a few members I talk to regularly that didn't live far away from me and I met up with some of them at concerts including a Brooks and Dunn concert back in 2008. I also met up with a singer who I talked to a few times on Myspace that lived a lot closer to me than I thought and he recognised me at the concert.

Your AV always reminds me of Travelers on Netflix...I just read a couple of days ago that it's been cancelled.

I talked to someone on mIRC a few years ago on a channel we both frequented, and he lived within 10 minutes' walking distance of me. He was unemployed and lived with his parents and I get the impression he wanted to meet up and perhaps be friends in real life, but I wasn’t interested. Plus, he told me he had a candida build-up (which is a kind of fungus) on his tongue. Even more of a reason to avoid him.

From memory I think the closest was someone I met on Battlefield 3, a few suburbs away. Maybe like 15 min drive away or so roughly.

Back in the early 2000s, when I still lived in my state capital, I met several women online whom I ended up meeting in real life.
From what I could tell, we all lived within the northern half of the city.

It turned out that one of the members on here lives in the exact smallish town I do.

I once recognised the uncle of one of my son’s friends as a regular member of the Soapbox community.
