If he didn't, then why do the Catholics teach it? No clue. Not something I or the vast majority of American Catholics subscribe to.
But the truth is not a democracy.
I am sure a lot of people ignore the churches teaching on condoms/birth control etc, because it's not convenient for them, but at the end of the day it's a sin and a serious sin at that.
a quick quote from that article...
and...
so while contraception might seem like no big deal to us, God see's it differently, and as usual... He's right, we are wrong.

As a secular humanist, I see it as a 'sin' NOT to use contraception. The Bible was written before such technology was available. Interpretation of what it actually says about it, is therefore far fetched and inconclusive and is mainly an apologist treatise on what some Catholic men decided would give them further power over individuals. NOT using contraception when the technology is there is criminal when it results in unwanted children, greater risks for women's heath and of course the BIG one, the spread of diseases like AIDS. IMHO the Catholic Church has blood on its hands over the situation in Africa, for instance. First of all with the missionaries stuffing up the lives history heritage and culture of African people and THEN not allowing them use of condoms to stop the spread of AIDS. It is disgraceful.
