Shooting in Panavision with Jan De Bont (director of Speed) as the cinematographer, it seems the look of the film rarely gets discussed. Yeah, it definitely isn't the most eye-popping and colors are pretty muted, with the exception of the bright red blood. This may be intentional. I also read that when making Jaws, Spielberg told the art department to avoid the color red to have the blood make a bigger impact. Either way, it's never visually dull, either. Maybe give the film credit to not calling attention to its visual style. Regardless, here are some memorable images.

I reckon if you asked Ah-nold and Sly Stallone who rewrote the book on Hollywood action set-ups at the close of America's ultimate practical action decade (the '80s?), Jan De Bont would be a name that loomed large in the conversation. Dude can stage a disaster and make it work.

Reminds me of Michael Mann, only less pretty & more serious.
