... is a pre-teen girl fixated on morbid things? The only examples I can think of at the moment are MY GIRL and LAWN DOGS.

Is Welcome to Dollhouse like that? I haven't seen it myself, but it seems like that kind of movie.

The Edge of Seventeen, she's not really fixated into anything dark but she's suicidal, selfish and anti-social.

I don't think these are coming-of-age movies. Good example! Is Welcome to Dollhouse like that? I haven't seen it myself, but it seems like that kind of movie. I haven't seen it either. The Edge of Seventeen, she's not really fixated into anything dark but she's suicidal, selfish and anti-social. But, as the title indicates, she's not a pre-teen.

"coming of age the time when a person reaches legal adulthood"
This rarely, if ever, happens to a pre-teen girl whether she is fixated on morbid things or not.

Rey Kahuka But then again . the whole concept is nonsense … coming of age is "normally " defined as about to become a legal adult ….
PRE-teens are NOT that ! it's like the OPs rabid insistence that all films with the same character are a "franchise" … The Robin Hood Franchise, The OZ franchise, Chinatown Franchise and so on ad nauseum !

"coming of age the time when a person reaches legal adulthood"
This rarely, if ever, happens to a pre-teen girl whether she is fixated on morbid things or not. That's the legal definition. The coming-of-age genre refers to fictional stories where a child or teen experiences something that helps them mature emotionally, pushing them closer to adulthood. However, we don't necessarily see them becoming adults physically on-screen. That only happened in BOYHOOD due to how it was filmed. And some stories have a flashforward at the beginning or the end. Leon is not a good example of this concept. No better than Addams Family Values, at least. Why not?

"The coming-of-age genre refers …. " "In genre studies, a coming-of-age story is a genre of literature and film that focuses on the growth of a protagonist from youth to adulthood ("coming of age"). Coming-of-age stories tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue over action, and are often set in the past. The subjects of coming-of-age stories are typically teenagers." Not PRE TEENS becoming teens. There is not a line between 12 and 13. Vits …

I agree that coming of age is commonly associated with teenagers. However the loss of innocence isn't necessarily confined to this age group. the go-between is a famous literary example, in which the narrator recalls a trauma at 12-13 year old. Then there are Charles Dickens' novels; great expectations, oliver twist, david copperfield. The point being that coming-of-age may be aligned with experience, regardless of age.
