I bet there are many who think of poetry readings as music of sorts. While I can see it as such, I am not one of them. That said, I suppose an a capella rap would not be a "song" to me unless it's sung. Plain speech? No, not me. But I'm sure there are those who hear "music" in everything. I think I would like to be one of those people. That is my point about rap. They are just speaking a poem over background music. They are not singing. People sing a song. Nobody speaks a song. Song or not:

He would have to be singing for it to be a song for me. Is an instrumental a song to you? Yes, there is melody.

I only listened to the first minute. What I heard, no, no song. Just somebody speaking over a little guitar and harmonica bits.

It's music, no question about that. It intrinsically incorporates music into the whole piece. Does that automatically make it a song? No, I don't think so.
I think it can be a song, but doesn't necessarily have to be one.

Is an instrumental a song to you? Yes, there is melody. But if spoken vocals are added, it's not a song anymore?

But if spoken vocals are added, it's not a song anymore? Absolutely.

Would you say all songs are music, but not all music is a song?

But if spoken vocals are added, it's not a song anymore? Absolutely. Then what is it?

Then it is just like rap --- somebody talking over music.

Then it is just like rap --- somebody talking over music. So the song becomes music because someone is speaking? Wow. The voice is indeed a powerful instrument.

I don't understand. Why isn't that a song?

I think Beethoven's 5th is a song. It's an instrumental.

But if spoken vocals are added, it's not a song anymore? Absolutely. I don't know about that take this oldie as an example where in the middle a guy starts with spoken vocals as a counterpoint. And tell me it's not a song:

Why does the song become music when someone talks over it? I never said that. I have been consistent from the beginning of this thread. Somebody talking over music is not a song.
