To read someTo read something on the screen? I notice doing this especially in an older movie, where there is a newspaper large enough. I'll pause, and make out the headlines, etc... Sometimes I'll do the same if it's in a big city, 1950s, to read the movie title on the marquee, and just signs in general - wondering what they sold, if some companies are around today, etc..thing on the screen? My step dad does that for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that can be read in a movie. Its FUCKING annoying!!!

Often there is an important plot point in a letter or other document that is too small on the TV to read without pausing ...have to go closer to see what is going on. They never seem to refer to what it said ! I like the ones where the character reads the letters aloud for our benefit.!

It was fun to do that in CABIN IN THE WOODS where the monster scenarios are written up on the betting board. They all appear later in the film.

If there is a lot of text on screen as well as if it's faced-paced. I can always rewind back in addition to pausing.

I forgot to mention prices -- especially gas, which usually have a big sign on the corner for the viewer to see, but also inside the store. I'll use the inflation calculator to compare, just like I do when I hear about a guy getting $10 a day for labor.

I have no idea why, but at any point in any movie that I see a gas station, I want to know the price. Drives my wife nuts.

It's important! It's the way we get by, but it effects everything. I like to do it do see how we're doing compared to a time that seemed easier economically 50 years ago. I live in a VERY poor city, but in the 60s, all you need was one income for a family of five; getting paid $100,000/yr back then is quite a lot, especially to do something very easy (yet boring)

Sometimes an old movie or TV show will be paused and re-wound to see if that WAS some future star appearing in a bit part. Often times it is and when in doubt, notes are taken to be confirmed (or not) after the show via the still useful bits left on IMDb-V1 !

I pause it every time a long text is shown on screen out of habit. There have been many times where I press play after reading it and the amount of time the camera lingers on the text was enough for me to read it. However, I prefer to not take chances. It's not like it'll take me more than a few seconds.

Whenever there's a long piece of non-scrolling text or maybe a newspaper article that I feel is important to the plot, I will pause the movie to read it.

It all depends on the font being used, how big and what colour it is compared to the background it's on. When yellow text is appearing over a desert scene or white text is appearing over a scene saturated in light it sometimes makes it hard. I appreciated the TV series Sherlock for putting text from text messages up on the screen, as it made that easier to read (I've watched quite a few shows where they give you a shot of the person's phone and the text message they've received or sent and I've had to pause it then so I can read them because they're so small and go by so quickly).
When someone's written a note to someone else, if it's not clearly written in a decent size and with easy-to-read handwriting, I find pausing is sometimes necessary.

I used to do that a heck of a lot. My job as a film projectionist only lasted a few weeks before they fired me.

Oh yeah, I do that. In an older film, you might find that the article under the headline, after a sentence or two, is just some incoherent rambling that has nothing to do with the headline. Amusing.
