Last time before that that there were large-scale riots was the poll tax riots of 1990. So I wouldn't say it happened very often

It's not something that happens very often, but I believe the aftermath of an unsuccessful Brexit, which causes undue and unfair hardship on a substantial number of UK citizens might possibly trigger further civil unrest.
