In a dream, you still can hear, see, feel, etc., right? You don't know you're dreaming until you wake up. That's how being alive is too. We don't know this is a dream until we 'wake up'. OK so I mean when you are sound a sleep and NOT dreaming, when it's Dark and nothing else. that must be just like death. It's not. The brain is still working.

Except that when you sleep, you are dreaming. But when you are not dreaming its like you don't exist. When you are asleep your brain is busy busy busy rebuilding body parts that need a rest, so that tomorrow you can be as fit as today. When you are dead your body chemistry works quite differently. Your body rots.

............................................To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause...............................

If you dont remember your dreams, you may as well be. Think of death as the phase before your own birth
