Stephen Duffy left as vocalist of Duran Duran. Did a couple of decent pop solo singles later.
Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware left Human League to form the not quite as successful Heaven 17.

Wasn't Neil the driving force behind the band becoming more progressive? They might not have been as successful without him anyway.

Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica prior to the first album coming out. Of course, both went on to be successful.

AC/DC first singer was Dave Evans. I'd say the replacement did better. Tim Stauffel quit Smile, who hired Freddie Mercury, changed the name to Queen and got a movie made about it. Journey's first album featured Gregg Rolie on lead vocals. Replaced with Steve Perry

Lowell George was part of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, but he liked drugs so he got kicked out. Then he formed Little Feat.
Thank God that Zappa was such an uptight bitch......
