Yeah I was thinking him as well.
The band would have been remembered as yet another innovative, influential 1960s cult band along the same lines as Love and the 13th Floor Elevators had he not been replaced by David Gilmour.

Glen Matlock was the original bassist for the Sex Pistols until he was replaced by Sid. Which is odd considering he was considerably more talented (could actually play bass, wrote most of the songs on the album)

AC/DC first singer was Dave Evans. I'd say the replacement did better. Tim Stauffel quit Smile, who hired Freddie Mercury, changed the name to Queen and got a movie made about it. Journey's first album featured Gregg Rolie on lead vocals. Replaced with Steve Perry
Gregg Rolie sang lead om Journey's first three albums, and didn't leave the band when Perry joined.
