I re-watched it a couple of years ago and it still holds up well, albeit having a definite "Cameron feel" to it...and I'm not a huge fan of his, so that ain't a good thing. Still very suspenseful though, and a worthy predecessor to the original, which it comes close to but doesn't quite reach that level. WHY aren't you a fan of his? Generally I am a fan of his, but I have one or two quibbles myself, so I wonder if they're the same ones... I guess after Aliens is when he began to lose me. Now mind you, he is a technical genius and I'm not diminishing his contributions to that side of of filmmaking; but too often he's lacks a good, tight narrative in his movies and tends to go for a lot of bombast and spectacle over any real substance. Take a look at the original Terminator and Aliens, and for me at least the most powerful moments were the "quiet" ones sprinkled throughout. Ripley's interactions with Newt, and to a lesser extent Hicks; or Sarah's moments with Reese in the motel. After that, those moments became fewer and fewer in his movies, and the stories seemed to exist only to move things along to his next big set piece. Granted, T2 is an awesome spectacle and a great movie in its own right, but I prefer the "smallness" of the original. Titanic had a serviceable story, but the only reason he made the movie was to be able to re-create the actual sinking. I try to keep my personal feelings about the fact that he's a huge douchebag out of the equation, but he certainly makes it hard to root for him.

His being a douchebag aside, I do think he's a good filmmaker. I don't think he's GREAT! I think that he has an ability to know what audiences want before they want it (Stephen Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock are the undisputed masters of that though). We'll see if that applies to the next Avatar movies.
One quibble that I have is that he shoots night time blue. Night isn't blue. Its dark. There's a difference. And yes, overall his movies are basically set pieces intended to showcase some new technical or SFX feat. Both he and George Lucas are more interested in technology than actual filmmaking.

I believe I'm not alone when I think of ALIENS as the film dominated by a character who is about sixth in the line up.
The thing about Hudson is his "up" and "down", in quite a credible way. A great "incredible" film, such as a "sci-fi" film, will show "credible characters in incredible circumstances".
A lot of people would do just like Hudson did, even if they don't think they would. People panic, they lose it, and they get it back. His depression and his second wind is what most people remember most about ALIENS. His goofy comments earlier, many people make such comments without realizing it, even classy people.
And the other characters are awesome, too. The green lieutenant has his "down" and "up". I kind of like the way the women in the film are more stable throughout a crisis.
But even if there was no Hudson, it would be a great film.

Fantastic movie , still in my top 5 faves for decades. Eminently re-watchable and a big benchmark for sci-fi. These aliens didn't stumble in slo-mo like the movie creatures of my early youth....they fucking RAN and were well hard dangerous. I got into Cameron because of this flick. Superb stuff .

Sadly no. That would be even a more fitting end. Here you go!
I like the version with the deleted scenes better. And that is perfect how she doesn't say anything to him. Just gives him a grenade and moves on.
