In this ongoing series, it seemed only a matter of time before getting to my all time favorite movie. Douglas Slocombe earned an Academy Award nomination but lost to Vitorrio Storaro.

The way it moves the story forward w/o saying really all that much or using 5 minutes of flashbacks is just gone now man. Just fucking gone.

How in the name of all that is Spielberg this movie lost Best Picture to that sedative otherwise known as Chariots of Fire is something I will never understand.

The 1998 Oscars show how powerful Harvey Weinstein was to have Shakespeare in Love win Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan. As least Spielberg won his second Best Director Oscar, though.

Even Reds was a better movie than Chariots of Fire. Oh well. This was one of the more egregious picks out of all the years for the Academy. Raiders is a beautiful film to look at. There are so many memorable scenes in my opinion. The map room is particularly well done. One of my favorite sequences. The only problem with Raiders is the sheer scope of the Nazi dig in what was otherwise a British pseudo "protectorate" back in the 1930's. I can see a few clandestine Nazis digging out in the desert with some native Egyptians. But that many armed Germans? The British wouldn't have looked too kindly on that.

The reveal of the Well of the Souls is such a fantastic moment. The music, Ford's reaction when the light shines to reveal the actual location, etc...
