I've always been a big fan of loons The first time I ever heard a loon was on that vacation I talked about earlier and loved hearing them. If you never heard one watch this short video. Even if you have heard them before take a look. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ENNzjy8QjU

I've always been a big fan of loons... unlike many sea birds, they're calmed, calming, & pretty f'n majestic. They're also nature's greatest soundtrack... because unlike wolves miles away, loon callings on a lake lets the sound effortlessly wave all over. They also have a silhouette like a spy. They're also abundant in Ontario where I live so yeah ftw. Loon calls bring to mind fond memories of summer camp in the Boundary Waters.

Loons also bring to mind "On Golden Pond".
And, a funny story about my husband; he was obsessive about washing his car, and after we crossed into Canada on a road trip, he looked for a car wash. He found one, and it said "Loonies Only", which I razzed him about, but it turned out a certain coin has an image of a loon, and this car wash did not accept American quarters!

Deer - they are so graceful and fluid in their movement. I cannot imagine why anyone would try to shoot one.

My eyes are a little cooked from working all day. And my lack of sleep induced letter rearrangement is setting in. I thought this thread was about "Favorite Wildfire" and it looked at tad insensitive.
Fortunately it was about wildlife which I really like. I'm tired so I'll just go with the squirrels in my backyard. We have brown, black and gray ones. And some hybrids. They start a lot of mischief and sometimes live in my attic. I hope they don't chew some wires and burn the place down when I'm not home. Now that I think about it, I hope that also doesn't happen when I'm home. On the peak of the Polar Vortex I stayed home from work and just sat in my dining room working. It was -15 F, which is pretty cold - but it was a bright and sunny day. About 10 ft. away from me, on the tree just outside my window was a really cool looking female cardinal. She hung out and chirped for a while, then flew off. Shortly afterward, a big red male cardinal came to the same spot and hung out for an hour or so. I Googled "how birds survive in the winter". After he flew off, the female came back for a while. Then I got busy with work. I really hope they met up somewhere.

Watching a movie in the afternoon on the tv in the upstairs sunroom. Noticed some activity in the tree outside the window of the next room. Something different is good, so put the movie on hold and took a better look: They were after some little apples still hanging on in the tree. Eventually they flew off and joined at least another dozen on the ground and then all wandered down the lane.

I think they are territorial, because I only see that pair at the birdfeeder. There are lots of other birds, some woodpeckers in multiples, but just that pair of cardinals. I have squirrels out back in my wooded area, but they don't come up to the house - I have an outdoor kitty, she won't come into the house with the other cats, she likes being 'wild' and the squirrels avoid her like the plague. She is a formidable huntress, catching voles and other small rodents. You get squirrels in your attic? I've had a black rat snake in mine. If the cats don't get the mice, the snake comes for a visit. She keeps to herself, but every now and again, I will find a shed snakeskin.

I love living in the country where I see all kinds of wildlife. I had three does feeding on something under the snow in my east pasture after the last snowstorm, and I could see them from my bedroom window. There is also the occasional opossum who cleans up any leftover cat food, and would love to get into my dumpster. Poor guy! I try to leave edibles out where he can get to them, but sometimes I forget. Every now and again, in the warm weather, I get tree frogs on the outside of my window. I love their little chirpy noises. I've taken photos, and maybe some day will make a painting of one of those little guys.

I looked it up online and narrowed it down to the months she was up there being time to be having baby squirrels. I saw once where there were some birds going crazy, and she bolted through my yard, in front of my dog, up the tree, onto the the wire, then onto the roof- and escorted her baby squirrel back up into the hole in the siding. It was odd because the situation was that she must have been out getting food and the birds wanted to catch the baby squirrel that wandered out onto the roof. The mom squirrel was raiding a birdfeeder at the neighbors back yard when this happened. I noticed this was a moment of her jumping into action when she ran straight at my dog who was probably confused as to why she didn't even run away. He just looked at me like WTF? It was kind of cool but then I got worried about that family. I think a little later I noticed the babies were bigger and lounging around on the roof. I have an upper area where I can walk out onto the upper roof. These little squirrels were pretty unconcerned with me, a human, going right up to them.

My dog had a possum visitor, once. Seriously when there was an animal he wanted to scare away, he would run with front paws pounding the ground, jumping and barking; making the ground shake a little. But one night he noticed this possum, in a tree, just over the fence. He got low, crept slowly, across the yard, and made his way over to the fence. One jump and that was that. I felt bad for that poor possum. But my dog was a bull terrier, so his expertise was to make quick work of anything he got a hold of.

Yeah, different breeds have different prey drives, and as sad as that is, it's nature. My outdoor kitty has that natural inclination, too, and I feel bad for the voles and mice, but she isn't going to change anytime soon. I feed her canned and dry food every day, but she still needs a little taste of the wild. My indoor cats are perfectly happy with commercial food and the random treat from my dinner plate.

They have such a deer overpopulation problem in SW PA, my mom gets them living in her yard in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. One of them actually gave birth there. They don't let you get close to touching them, but they'll stand on the other side of the fence and let you throw food at them. I have a great video of my dog barking at a family of 3 does and two fawns. Those deer weren't afraid of her at all, much to her disappointment, lol.

They had a lot of strays and I'd feed them, sometimes try to re-home them. This one possum used to show up every night to eat the cat food. I love them, they look giant rats, and I loved my pet rats. They can be mean though. The one I fed would hiss the cats away with a full mouth of very sharp looking teeth.
