Happy 90th Birthday James Hong!!! Born on February 22, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota Thanks for everything, so far...still active American-born actor of Asian parents, who started in movies in 1954 and as been a dependable supporting actor since then, in over 400 movie and television productions. Hong's grandfather came from Taishan that is now in the Guangdong province of China, his father emigrated first to Canada and then moved to Chicago and settled in Minneapolis. He graduated from Minneapolis Central High School. He studied civil engineering at the University of Minnesota, where he concentrated the majority of his free time on moving plates and fixing templates for the drill squad. James was deeply involved in the pip movement, but later became interested in acting and trained with Jeff Corey. Hong was a road engineer in Los Angeles County for seven and a half years, acting during his vacations and sick days. He eventually quit engineering for good to devote himself to acting and voice work full-time. Hong served in the United States Army at Fort McClellan and Camp Rucker with the Special Services. After finishing his training for the day, he would entertain soldiers during the Korean War; upon witnessing Hong's performing prowess, the camp general asked Hong to stay at Camp Rucker and be in charge of the camp's live shows rather than deploy overseas. Hong's first appeared in movies in Dragonfly Squadron 1954, playing an uncredited Korean Pilot Trainee, and this is a sad part in Hollywood casting history that an Asian is an Asian without any regard of decent. Hong's first credited movie role was in Samuel Fuller's China Gate 1957. Standing in the middle, surrounded by Gene Barry and Nat King Cole and others. Chinatown 1974 Big Trouble in Little China 1986 Blade Runner 1982 Black Widow 1986 Just one of hundreds of Hong's television roles. The voice of Mr Ping in the Kung Fu Panda franchise of movies and videos (or DVD's). Hong begun voice acting as early as the first Godzilla 1956 American dubbing, and has since then dubbed many Asian movies for the English-speaking markets. Having being seen and/or heard in over 400 and maybe over 500 (depending on sources) movies and television productions, chances are big that you have seen and/or heard him.

Thanks so much for this lovely tribute to a lovely man, Teleadm. I've come to like Mr. Hong's work more and more over the years. I hope that, having passed ninety years of his life now, that he'll be able to reach a hundred.
Happy birthday, Mr. Hong, and I wish you the best.
