I convert movies from dvds I own to digital form so I can watch them on my media player or a portable dvd player that takes a USB drive. I frequently edit them to remove words, scenes/parts I just don't want to hear/watch over and over again. I have also taken scenes that didn't make the final cut and which were included on the dvd and added them back into the movie. Does anyone else do this?

This reminds me of those famous versions of the Star Wars films that are fan-made and edit out the objectionable special edition changes.

I did this when I wanted to show my little nephew Peter Jackson's King Kong. I toned down some of the violence. I also made a shortened edit of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" to show my niece. That movie is way too long.

Yeah, those scenes were odd and too scary for young kids. It was like the horror movie part of King Kong.

Never done this, but if I had all the right tools and space, I’d try it.

I do. I edited "E.T." quite a bit for my niece and nephew. Took some edge off the scary parts. Particularly, I cut the two shots of him sick (lying in the woods and later the bathtub). I also have an edit of some movies that feature only the predominant music cues in successions. Rough edits, but if I am looking mostly to enjoy the soundtrack, they do the job.
I also like to get a little weird with it for experimentation's sake. For example, taking a scene and removing any segment with dialogue. This isn't my video, but it's a perfect example of what I'm talking about:
There's no audio removed, there's just a lot of pausing and little background music/sound so it's easy (and interesting at least to me) to do this.
There was this other guy, a researcher of some kind who did some other projects up this alley. His name escapes me (and the internet too apparently). Was back in the mid 90s when editing software was beginning to hit your standard home PC. There were a lot of weird projects coming out, but in particular, one guy isolated bits of the old show "Love Line."
For example he'd run all of the inhaling sounds of Dr. Drew consecutively (cutting everything else) with no in between. So it's like 2 straight minutes of a guy inhaling, no spaces between them. It was nauseating to listen to because you start to really want to hear that exhale. He did this (and many others) as some sort of psychological experiment for his PhD. I'll share it when I find it. It's a little strange, but interesting if nothing else.

Yeah, I've been wanting to show my niece and nephew E.T., but there's a ton of stuff in that movie I don't want to explain like when E.T. gets drunk causing Elliot to drunkenly kiss that blonde girl. Also Elliot calling his brother penis breath.

Never done this, but if I had all the right tools and space, I’d try it. I happen to have Corel Vision Studio...have had that version ~15 years...got it when it was kind of new and just...stuck with it. I'm sure it's not better than other software, but I'm used to it. I get the update every few years. I started using it when I had to put together a slide show for my son's wedding...you know, taking old scanned photos and putting them together with music etc. Then, I got the equipment and software to capture VHS and converted a ton of my old VHS movies before I threw them out. It allows you to make chapters and create DVDs. Now, I don't make DVDs, just put the files on an external hard drive and have it connected to my Sony media player so I can flick through a hundred movies or more from my easy chair...more of a novelty/hobby than a real convenience since I end up keeping the DVDs anyways.

Funny, I once had a DVD cover maker on my laptop for my discs for some time, but that didn’t fly. I try to make and keep DVDs instead of having the movies digitally, unless on certain occasions.

Do you mean covers as in round paper with adhesive with software to edit labels and print them off? I did that a few times too....good for when I used to back up digital photos etc on dvds. But I found the labels sometimes impaired using the disks in some disk drives...made the disks too thick.

I did an edit of the Matrix sequels as one movie. Been meaning to do edits of Scream 4 and The Dark Knight Rises as well.

Aha! Just tracked down the research from my previous post. For anyone interested, it's "Isolation Studies" by Chuck Jones. There isn't anything on this link about his work, just a summary of the recordings. It's weird, but a cool conceptual listen. There are nine different tracks on this link. None are very long. Got a kick out of these www.babygorilla.com/warehouse/art/isolation/isolations.html
