I may not be as enamored with the movie as I was back in 2000, but it still packs a punch. Central to the film's success is Crowe's powerful performance, even when the character is noble to a fault. On another note, I'm always surprised when reminded this movie won the Oscar for Best Picture as well.

His performance is fine, but I've never understood why it was good enough to win an Oscar.

Hanks had the more difficult role in gaining/losing weight for his role, and even more difficult, keeping an audiences attention on the island with him having minimal dialogue and no person to interact with.

I think Joaquim Phoenix deserved the Oscar more than Crowe.

I think Joaquim Phoenix deserved the Oscar more than Crowe. That moment when you realize things are gonna get a helluva lot worse before they get any better.

From all the other contenders, I only hadn't seen Chocolat. They're all fine but yeah, I'd probably give it to Gladiator too. Hollywood cannot be bothered to make (good) movies like this anymore so I appreciate what we get. Ironically I think it's because Ridley Scott ran it to the ground.

The days when A list actors were winning awards starring in main stream Hollywood blockbusters. Good times
