I'm always impressed when reminded he rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force. For his film career, going with Vertigo. One of the great performances about loss and obsession.

I don't generally seek out Jimmy Stewart movies, but the two I think of are It's a Wonderful Life and Cheyenne Social Club

Way too hard for me to choose just one as he's one of my favorite all time actors.
Top 3 though:
Vertigo Spirit of St. Louis Rear Window

It's a close call, but I'd have to say...
VERTIGO
Followed closely by...
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956)
REAR WINDOW
ANATOMY OF A MURDER
ROPE
THE GLENN MILLER STORY

"Rear Window" was the first that came to mind, but I suppose it's because it is my favourite Hitchcock and one of my favourite movies, period. Thinking a little bit more about the question, I think I will answer "It's a Wonderful Life" instead, which was a more iconic role.

George Bailey!
Yeah it's funny about his military service because you don't really expect him to be the kind of guy for that. Likewise, Charles Durning had a silver star and other medals, he was also a professional ballroom dancer!
