Two historically important film directors, whose careers effectively ended with the advent of talkies, came back decades later to act in two of the greatest films ever made:
Erich von Stroheim (last movie directed in 1934) had an important and very memorable supporting role in Sunset Boulevard (1950) which was Oscar Nominated.
Victor Sjöström (last movie directed in 1937) played the lead brilliantly in Wild Strawberries (1957) BAFTA Nominated Best Foreign Actor.
