I've seen The Wicker Man (1973), but not The Wicker Man (2006). Its IMDb rating is only 3.7. Its Rottentomatoes scores are also crap. Netflix gives it 3 out of 5 stars though.
Was it really that bad?

I've seen the highlights online but never watched the whole thing. Those seemed delightful.

I thought the torture scene and the ending were the best parts of the movie. Most of the movie was bland,

No.
I stand by that it is a misunderstood comedy.
I think everything in the movie that is awful and "unintentionally" hilarious was done intentionally by the director to achieve a "so bad it is good" effect.
You don't dress Nicolas Cage in a ridiculous looking bear costume and have him karate kicking, punching and stealing women's bicycles at gunpoint and not expect it to be hilarious.
I think Neil Lebute successfully trolled the audience and considering his twisted sense of humor it makes total sense. He has written and directed more than one movie involving a character playing is sick trick on another character as the main plot and I think he was playing a trick on the audience with The Wicker Man.
