I LOVE both. He is great in Mystic River and Milk imo. I do prefer Milk to Mystic but really its a travesty Farrell, Gleason, and Hoffman never got nominated at all.

I wouldn't have nominated Gleeson or Hoffman either. That isn't to say they aren't excellent, but there are only 5 spots and sometimes there are more than 5 performances that are equally as good as one another. I think Ferrell deserved a spot more than Brad Pitt, but I like Langella, Penn and Rourke better than Farrell, Hoffman and Gleeson.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman 4. Michael Fassbender 5. Sean Penn.

I tend to like the more showy performances. Fassbender is way too subtle for my taste.

I'm not sure if you thought that I meant he is too subtle in general. I love him in Shame, Alien: Covenant, 12 Years a Slave, Inglourious Basterds, Steve Jobs and the X-Men movies. Yeah, he hasn't been picking very good projects lately and that seems to be hurting his career.

Sad as he seemed promising a few years ago actually.

I know most people think Rourke and Murray should have won, but I personally think Penn deserved both of them. Fantastic performances.

I support his win for Mystic River. People accuse him of being over the top, but I don't expect a guy to be too stoic when their daughter is found murdered.
Not a fan of his win for Milk. For one, beating the far superior Mickey Roarke for political reasons (Penn is famously liberal, Roarke was a Bush supporter), and two for playing it as a gay stereotype. I've seen footage of the actual guy, and for the most part he sounds like the average Jewish guy from New York, not the campy queen Penn puts on.

His best work ever was in Dead Man Walking, for which he lost, so winning for two other roles mostly makes up for such a shocking oversight.

His win for Milk is one of the more deserving in that category of recent decades. I'm generally wary of award wins for biographical roles, but this is a great performance, and unlike anything else we had seen Penn do.
He was excellent in Mystic River, too. I preferred Ben Kingsley among the nominees but Penn was a perfectly acceptable winner.

I don't think I would like the man personally, but he earned both those Oscars. He's a fine actor.
