Is it true Vegemite is kangaroo poop? Why do y'all eat that? Poop of any kind is very unhealthy even by Australian standards.

My mother never cooked, really. Just on Sundays when it was considered de rigueur for church-going families. She was so pleased when that switched to 'going out to eat after church'. Even for Wednesday night church suppers, she would 'make' something that took almost no effort, or was purchased prepared, like potato salad. Sometimes, she would fry potato slices in Crisco - I make those to this day, but use olive oil, instead.
I ate a lot of cereal and milk. I will never eat it again.
At one point in my life, my Dad had an office next to a candy salesman. AWESOME! Hot cinnamon candies, my favorite! Sweet-tarts, a few others... That was fun.
My Dad had grown up in a subsistence-farming family. So he would have a vegetable garden every year - fresh corn, peas, peppers... luckily I could eat them raw. Sometimes they would get boiled. Dad would make hand-churned vanilla ice cream - I've never found a commercial brand that tastes like that, and the recipe has been lost for years.

I might dig a hole or use a barrel, but why both? That's just a waste of resources. Besides, recycling is important...

Dad would make hand-churned vanilla ice cream - I've never found a commercial brand that tastes like that, and the recipe has been lost for years. My mum was Dutch and despite being an enrolled nurse her entire working life and working shifts, she was a natural and excelled at all of the domestic duties. Fortunately, I picked up a few tricks from her. As a teenager, most of my friends were friends with her and quite familiar with her cooking skills. They never passed up an invite for a meal. Dad left school at ten, worked as a drover on cattle stations, served in WWII and afterwards worked in an isolated Aboriginal community as a federal cop before pursuing nursing. As you can imagined, he was quite an independent person and had a broad range of skills - including cooking. He would cook the roasts, occasionally make damper and when mum was at work, pan curry. Unfortunately, like you, many of the recipes I enjoyed from my childhood and my youth are now lost in the mists of time.
