I've noticed that in several films, Heston walks as if he has back pain. Was he known to have suffered a significant back injury or to have other spinal disease?

Hollywood Babble-on mentioned athlete's foot.... maybe that caused the pain ?
It would explain the habitual wearing of sandals.
