Humphrey Bogart played himself in every movie. Clark Gable always played Clark Gable.

Humphrey Bogart played himself in every movie. Clark Gable always played Clark Gable. Yeah, for the most part (at least from what I've seen)

Catman agrees but wonders how anyone understood Brando when he said it.

I haven't seen enough of Gable's movies to comment. But as far as Bogie is concerned, Duke Mantee is nothing like Rick Blaine, who's nothing like Philip Queeg, who's nothing like Linus Larabee, who's nothing like Fred C. Dobbs. Besides that, I'd watch Bogie any day of the week and twice on Sundays before I watched any Brando movies in which he's the main star.

I remember Brando catching some flack for saying Hollywood is run and owned by Jews.

He said that because he was a method actor and they weren't.

Not always. Bogart's most iconic roles were similar but he's deviated before. He was not a wholesome man in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and he wasn't very nice in Conflict either. The latter, I had to see for myself to believe he could be so unlikable, and he wasn't even over the top unlikable.
So no.

In RETURN OF DR X he portrayed a creepy kind of horror character. In Virginia City he played a Mexican bandit I think. He was probably more of a character actor than Gable. Bogart had such a distinctive voice and appearance though, that one might think of him as just playing the same character over and over, but it probably has more to do with the types of roles and the fact that he had such a recognizable voice.
Ultimately this discussion doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy mixed up world.

Just as a general comment on 'people playing themselves'...
I think that's generally the case in movies as some stuff is just there, like a persons mannerisms and general charisma etc, that people can't really alter, at least not too much. sure, some might be a bit better at altering themselves(or hiding themselves) better than others. but in the end... overall screen presence/charisma is paramount on what ultimately carries a persons performance which means I don't really care if someone 'plays themselves' or not as long as their overall presence/performance holds my attention better than most etc.
because I think once someone becomes a bit too technical/mechanical in their performance it tends to suck the life out of there overall presence which I think is why, especially in leading roles, a person in acting probably does not want to change what they generally do too much.
basically I would assume people in general like more warm types of people on screen, basically those with charisma, than not which is not surprising as it tends to connect with that general emotional response/feeling a person wants when watching a movie in general.

Yes, but what of it? They were perfect for the parts they did play.

Nicholson has developed "Nicholson tics" .. the eyeroll, the eyebrows thing, the YELLING … that he uses over and over even when they are not necessarily essential to the character.
Pacino does the same thing.. little Pacino-isms that (for me) distract from the character.
IMO <---- Bogart became the character. I see RICK BLAINE and Dobbs and all those other people and not Bogart.
As for someone playing himself .. since we don't really know what they were like off screen … who knows? Maybe ALL of their in-public-ness was acting.
In the film "A Week with Marilyn" ~~ just as she is going to be seen by her adoring public Marilyn Monroe: Shall I be her?

This. A lot of today's top actors are just playing subtle variations of their baseline personality. Christian Bale, Matthew McHaunghay, Ryan Gosling, Liam Neeson, Tom Cruise some examples. I dont see it as a bad thing.
