Seems like a participation trophy. "You don't have many years left and we never awarded you an Oscar or as many as you really should have gotten. Here. Take this with our sympathies."

I like them. Some fine directors are among the recipients, as well as filmmakers who may never have been invited to the party otherwise. Roger Corman's Oscar was my favourite.

There's no denying it's given to those who Oscar passed by over the years. Still, they probably appreciate the recognition, finally.

I don't have one so it sucks. Seriously, give me one. I can not win an Oscar too!

Oscars are overrated in general.
a actor/actress true worth is what the general public thinks of you and your movies over the long term. some are remembered and many are forgotten. hell, look at those 'Best Picture' nominee's... how many will be remembered as the decades pass?, I suspect not many.

It's basically a "we are sorry for fucking you over" award.

It's basically a "we are sorry for fucking you over" award. If that's the case then Val Kilmer should have gotten one for "TOMBSTONE" a disgustingly long time ago.
He got ROYALLY Screwed by the Oscars (They didn't even Nominate Him for it and He was Incredible in that Movie!).

I don't really see how it's a participation trophy. If anything, wouldn't it be more difficult to get a lifetime achievement award than a regular one?

GREAT actors can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and although nominated, not be presented with an award in a particular year (or years <think Glenn Close> )
The Honorary Award for acting (popularly knows as the Lifetime Achievement Award) is given for a LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENT … that is hardly a "participation award".
If someone later and FINALLY gets one for a particular performance, that's frosting on the cake !

That was always my favorite part of the Oscar broadcasts. I think it stinks that they did away with them, forgetting an artist's body of work while celebrating every piece of soon-to-be-forgotten Oscar bait that comes along.

My favorite was Ray Harryhausen although they didnt give it to him at the main event but the technical awards show.

I can still recall Jack Nicholson's pronunciation of Michelangelo Antonioni when he presented him with one in 1994. I did watch the Oscars at some point.

The wording on this award
In recognition of his/her many and memorable and compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his/her craft.
"participation" ? I think not !

I mean whole careers, not just one or two performances. Even without him being nominated for Tombstone, 1993 is still one of the best years for the category as far as Oscar nominations.
